Seriously looking into Linux for my PC because Microsoft and their overzealous approach to AI is making me nervous as heck.
I'm going to settle on Ubuntu as my familiarity with that Linux distro is high enough; I do need to check for any major changes with CLI commands, reworking of OS features, and the like before switching over. I don't want any surprises.
Over the next few days, I will back-up anything I need in the future digitally.
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds me too, I am looking for something for gaming other than Ubuntu, got any ideias? (something with nvidia graphics would do amazingly)
@nicabar I'm still not sure myself, as I need to look deeper into Linux again. A quick search pulled up potential distros but due to few years knowledge gap, I'm not yet comfortable giving advice to you.
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds its alright, I will give POP_OS! A try again, I did it a few years ago and felt ok, saw that nvidia got Updated recently so I will give it another shot
@nicabar Yeah, I did read about Pop_OS as well, nvidia recently did announce better drivers for Linux, as they wanted there to be parity with the drivers available to Windows users. Time will tell if this is an announcement they back up diligently with action.
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds
I've been seeing a lot of toots about the new M$ shit.
That now legions of win user will start to move to linux, that M$ just make the linux desktop year, etc.
That's all BS!!
Maybe a couple users will move to linux, just like every other time, but the mayority of windows users will swallow it and move on, also like every other time.
The only good thing about this is the couple fun days I'm gonna have reading all those toots ..xdddd
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds There is always that initial uncomfort with switching platforms just because you're used to your workflow, but as long as what you need is there (and almost everything is) it's so worth it. Genuine technological freedom and actual control over your experience, and peace of mind.
@arcadetoken The basics which I need are always available on Linux, I remember quite a few of them off the top of my head. Like LibreOffice (one of my favorite software suites outside of Microsoft Office). Given that my gaming library was handpicked with a high Linux compatibility, it will be a painless shift in that regard. As the day that Microsoft openly fouled their bed was coming. It was simply sooner than expected.
@wendigo Jolly good, anxious me just will still check as making sure thrice will ease this chaotic brain. As the experience I remember is distorted with time.
@wendigo@WanderingInDigitalWorlds +1 for Linux Mint. If you think you want Ubuntu, you probably want Mint. It's simply Ubuntu without the bad decisions Canonical has made the last few years. It's significantly more beginner friendly
@mekuso@wendigo I'm not a beginner, just a returner after years of not using Linux. Mint does seem like a better choice in all honestly (I have both browser tabs open). Canonical is making some poor decisions so...I want to be sure that the choice I am making is wise. I might choose the Mint Cinnamon Edge as my hardware is fairly current.
@wendigo@alexhammy I'm pretty neutral on the whole Snap vs Flatpak...At the time, Snap was starting to be used on Ubuntu before I switched back to Windows. It didn't cause me any specific issues, there are advantages to both. I do wish that distro supporters would choose one to remain consistent between various distros to make Linux Software distribution better.
@wendigo Snap is the only one I had direct experience with due to Ubuntu, Canonical is still trying to get devs to adopt it. I can see the potential of Snaps but in the wild performance and stability matters more.
I will do some more reading about Snap and Flatpak, specifically about the end user relevant information. It's better to be informed than in the dark on such matters.
@alexhammy@wendigo Yes, that much I do understand. I'm taking in everything first without judgement before making a final choice, being neutral as possible helps me a lot with choices.
@alexhammy I am too ultimately because there is a lot to take in. I've seen a lot of reviews of distros which handle nvidia drivers the best (the one I chose for my PC). This will be one of the main deciding factors. Ubuntu is weighted lower at the moment because of their AI (LLM in disguise) ambitions.
