Let's be clear on what it means that a famine in the technical sense is imminent for 1.1 million people in Gaza according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
One of the criteria is 2 deaths per 10,000 people from outright starvation or the interaction of malnutrition and disease... PER DAY.
The people who understand this stuff are saying that a situation is imminent where there are AT LEAST 200 starvation deaths every day.

In Gaza it must be hard to tell exact figures with getting to a working hospital being dangerous, many hospitals not even slightly working & the few that are slightly working being too rushed off their feet to spend time doing admin. Many probably die without getting to a hospital for starters.
I sometimes quote/copy the infographics from Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, and almost always their figures tend to be higher than those from UN or others.
It doesn't disturb me so much as the ongoing catastrophe itself, though.

In other words, I think that one is about differences in categorising the reported numbers, not different raw data or an estimate of under-reporting.

@jonburr@FrankFrank@palestine There is no contradiction here. “Famine" is a descriptor of the severity of the starvation, it does not imply it's a natural catastrophe. There is a famine because Israel is committing the crime of deliberate starvation.

They are also doing their part to prolong the suffering. But they’re not the ones who control the borders of Gaza or drop bombs on it or blockade food, water, and electricity from going in. You can also talk about Somalia and make pat remarks about “the guys with the guns eat,” it doesn’t change the facts on the ground or make Hamas solely or even primarily responsible for what’s happening now.

Hamas is not a "terrorist group", it's a resistance movement.

Israel is the occupying power, as such, they are responsible for the violence, both the violence occupation needs to maintain itself and the violence that surged as a response to said occupation.

The point is that media report on organizations saying that “famine is imminent” but without explaining how terrible the situation is that it even meets the definition of an “official” famine. Of course it’s already a famine in the intuitive sense of the word.
