@tomw composer lists 7.2 as the minimum supported version of Composer 2.3+, not as the maximum version.

@tomw Composer itself should be fine, but you might get deprecation warnings for old plugins and stuff in individual projects.

@tomw I think you're seeing "7.2+", not just "7.2". It means 7.2 and anything higher.

@tomw The latest release of Composer works great on PHP 8.x. It just has 7.2 as a minimum.

@tomw the deprecations are probably expected. Shifting from 7 to 8 on all of my projects saw similar. Updating the managed packages resolved most of it. My own code needed some updates as well. It is a bit overwhelming at first though.

@tomw have you tried "composer selfupdate"? Sometimes you're stuck with an ancient version that got installed by another package manager :-(

@michael 'composer install' spewed out miles of deprecation warnings and didn't install anything. I know that's not really specific enough to debug, will have another try with it

@tomw https://github.com/composer/composer says PHP 7.2.5 or above is needed for the latest version of composer. I'm using it with PHP 8.1 since ages without problems. Do you get an error message?
