🚨 BREAKING: The UK government has confirmed it is rowing back on its plans to scan private messages.

They've finally back down with an announcement that Ofcom won't use powers in the spy clause contained in the Online Safety Bill until it's 'technically feasible' to do so.

They've conceded that no current technology exists that would protect privacy or avoid breaking encryption.

ORG, along with privacy activists, tech companies and security experts, have long warned that it isn't possible to scan messages that use end-to-end encryption without undermining privacy and security.

While this is a victory for all campaigners who've highlighted the dangers of the spy clause to be used for mass surveillance, the powers could still be used in the future.

✊ We continue to fight for the removal of the spy clause.

@openrightsgroup
I'm thinking that on the day it becomes "technically feasible" they will hand their military, law enforcement, and security crypto over to a trusted third party ie the UN to ensure no country can ever prepare for war against another or against its own people. Peace on Earth at last, no?

Christo,

@openrightsgroup
So they still intend to do it

MaybeMyMonkeys,

@openrightsgroup the royals, nobles, crooked politicians and their friends figured out they were vulnerable and put a stop to it

@openrightsgroup Smart Power has prevailed over Sharp Power! 🙌

seanm,

@openrightsgroup how is this a victory?

My understanding is that:

  • the language is unchanged
  • the government power is still be approved
  • the government is only "promising" to not use its new powers

Is any of this incorrect?

mariubrlu,

@openrightsgroup WOW!!!!!! How is that a win? How is that even a small win? Who decides when is "TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE" to do so?

I maintain my point: when are the protest waves going to commence?

@openrightsgroup thank you for your efforts on this issue. It's not the sexiest beat, but it's very important.

@openrightsgroup that is good, but do we really trust them? That clause needs removing altogether

They’re probably lying.
You know that, right?

@openrightsgroup It's never going to be "technically feasible" but the law will be on the statute books so the Government will use it for something

They've obviously thought of a way to use it & I guarantee we won't like it

This power needs to be removed from the bill before it's passed

jfparis,

@openrightsgroup Thanks god this government has no track record of doing exactly the opposite of what they said they would do on the day the law came into force

@openrightsgroup Conservatives undertake not to spy on British citizens, yet seek to persuade us they're doing us a favour, & might do it later anyway?

Given the timeline of their remaining term in office, their undoubted preoccupation now is concealing the evidence of their corruption, to try & keep it out of future Courts & Inquiries.

Justice will be served. lawbreakers, be on notice: data-thieves, electoral-funding cheats, contract-fixers & bribe-takers will be prosecuted.

@openrightsgroup Yeah, right, like anyone would ever trust a government who said "we're giving ourselves these powers, but we aren't going to use them, honest guv!"

@openrightsgroup rowing back on the plans but not the legislation then?
