I love how I can scroll through Mastodon without seeing any ads or promoted posts. It's so refreshing to be able to see what my friends and followers are up to without being interrupted by all the marketing crap.
I know some people think that ads are a necessary evil, but I don't. I think we should be able to use social media platforms without being constantly bombarded by ads.
So thanks, Mastodon, for being a place to connect with my peeps without having to worry about ads. I appreciate it.
@WingedAssault ads are a necessary evil if nobody's willing to pay for service so people please chip in to help cover the costs of running instances or there will be ads.
Hear hear. I think 'evil' is perhaps a step on the road to hyperbole, but if we might stick to the (OK, only marginally more objective) #economics of #decentralised#SocialMedia , the users externalise their costs, unless they're making it worth the provider's expense. (Thanks @ColinTheMathmo !)
I'd love to know if it was possible to throw context dependent #advertising up alongside a #kbin instance to fund its operation, as I don't think most users are ready to pay for social media, but I wouldn't wish to fund it by mining their data and selling it.
