atomicpoet,

Here's a feature comparison of Calckey and Mastodon.

This handy chart not only compares Calckey with Mastodon, but all the well-known Fediverse microblogging software with each other.

But a chart can only tell you so much. If you really want to know what makes Calckey different from Mastodon, you have to try it.

If you want to know more about Calckey, visit this site:

@atomicpoet Huh‽ #Misskey & #Mastodon have search.

Misskey turns their off by default (you can easily turn it on within settings) & Mastodon requires you to implement the #ElasticSearch code on your instance. I use search on both of my solo instances.

Misskey does not have an official app, but #MissRirica replicates most (if not all) of the options on the web interface (something most official apps on other platforms can not do yet).

atomicpoet,

@darnell Might need adjusting. You should share your thoughts with @kainoa.

@atomicpoet @kainoa Ok, thanks!

kainoa,

@darnell @atomicpoet The search one was a mistake (fixed), but the app column is specifically for first party apps. Also, I feel like I've talked to you already about this, but MissRirica does not replicate anything. It's a recompiled version of the web interface for mobile using Capacitor.

DuncanWatson,

@darnell @atomicpoet I have not been able to search on any of the Mastodon instances I have been a part of.

@DuncanWatson @atomicpoet Yeah, you have to enable #ElasticSearch within #Mastodon: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/optional/elasticsearch/

You can ask the admin of the Mastodon instance to install it as it is very useful. I wish it was enabled by default but I think it is intentionally left out.

@darnell @DuncanWatson @atomicpoet Elastic is not something you casually enable. It's very powerful but you need to be intentional about sharding, retention, etc. Very easy to quickly fill up your storage and take your instance down if you don't.

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@vwbusguy @DuncanWatson @atomicpoet Why is this the case for but not for other instances like

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@darnell @DuncanWatson @atomicpoet It is also the case for Misskey and Calckey. That's nothing to do with the platforms, but elastic is elastic, no matter what is connecting to it. I saw at least one Calckey post recently where an instance went down due to Elastic.

@darnell @DuncanWatson @atomicpoet To be clear, I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't do it, but it's not a trivial amount of resources for storage, IO, and tuning. It's not a simple "just run another container" scenario.

@darnell @DuncanWatson @atomicpoet That said, Calckey seems to be pushing innovation in this area where Mastodon's search remains very barebones - https://easymode.im/notes/9ehzlorsbg

  • atomicpoet,

    @fasnix Friendica is not a microblog service, it's a macroblog service.

    @atomicpoet Glitch-soc is another misskey fork, right? Or did they fork Mastodon?

    atomicpoet,

    @FeralRobots I believe Glitch-soc is a Mastodon fork.

    spigot,

    @atomicpoet Looking forward to giving Calckey a try on the official instance when invites open up again.

    atomicpoet,

    @spigot To be clear, calckey.social is not the only "official" server run by the Calckey team.

    spigot,

    @atomicpoet It's the one instance listed that seemed the best fit. Migrating might be dead easy but still some level of mental overhead. Maybe I'll give the HermHerm instace a go.

    atomicpoet,

    @spigot It's all right. Registrations will be open again tomorrow.

    spigot,

    @atomicpoet Oh sweet, good to know thank you! I've signed up for hermherm so it'll be a good excersize in migrating if I decide to do that. Cheers.

    dumbo,

    @atomicpoet

    Have been watching.

    Could you answer? ... what do the symbols in the chart indicate. My guess is degree of functionality, and (blank) is missing?

    atomicpoet,

    @dumbo Yes.
