Hey tech companies! Can you just stop it with all this taking data/images/text/voice/everything to train AI that has absolutely nothing to do with the products we pay you for? Or doing things like using our private video calls to train AI? Or to take our art that you host, to train AI?

Seriously! Enough is enough!

They know it's wrong, or they would make it all opt-in instead of making it opt-out or not-opt-able.

They know people don't want to do it, so they're gambling on people just putting up with it.

This really seems like a space that needs clear, simple laws.

I'm contemplating putting this under a CW, but I'm not sure.

Since I'm not really talking about AI itself, but just the ethics around data collection process.

    @artcollisions good point!

    @kristinHenry I'm guessing they justify it to themselves by thinking the good it will do outweighs the bad. Like the introduction of Google's StreetView or even Google Maps. Sure, you can see what people's houses and backyards are like, but most everybody uses it so that level of privacy being lost is no big thing. And so it is with copyright too.

    There's laws against infringing copyright though. You have to prove it's happened though.

    @BLatro Yeah, and only Disney has a budget to keep their property out of these text-to-image tools...so far.

    To me what bothers me, is the internal core of unethical existence. Of seeing customers as fodder. As every human being as gold waiting to be mined.

    @BLatro I don't know what is going on in the brains of these tech-leaders, but it sure looks like a Dr. Who episode where the Cybermen or Daleks infect dudes with a toxin that takes over their brains.

    @kristinHenry This is not by one of those tech-leaders, but is a good explanation of the thinking involved.

    In my case, I considered the rot was setting in when my government (meaning New Zealand) introduced photos on drivers licenses in the 80s. Couldn't they see how this could be abused? They of course became the default ID, whereas now it's becoming facial recognition software.

    @BLatro Ummm...photos have been included in drivers licenses in the US in at least one state since 1958. That's just based on a quick search.

    Both of my parents had pix on dmv, and they were young in the 60s.

    @BLatro
    and passports have had pictures for how long?

    It's not about photos on ids. it's about companies stealing images and data.

    kristinHenry,
    @kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

    @BLatro but we can agree to disagree. and find common ground on where we do worry in concert.

    BLatro,

    @kristinHenry Whether it's your photo or your art, once it's digitized it opens you up to being exploited. And you may not even know you've been exploited.

    Not surprised the US had photos on drivers licenses a lot earlier than us. (Just checked, and it was 1999 before we got them. I can't believe it was that late!) So, this is a case of living through a change giving you a different perspective on things.

    kristinHenry,
    @kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

    @BLatro I grew up, in my young years, in an era before anything was digitized anything.

    I was already a young adult in the early days of the internet.

    Still, I was very protective of my kids. I even insisted that the wedding photographer at my cousin's wedding take down the photos they'd taken of my kid. The photographer was furious with me, and I'm not sure my cousin has still forgiven me...some 20 years later.

    @kristinHenry 1/2 So we do think alike, really. (I was born in the 50s, didn't touch a computer until the early 80s, but was instantly hooked. Got online in 97, which was a bit late for a geek, but not that late.)

    I remember being in touch with a guy in the US who had created speech control for toy robots, but my robot wouldn't recognize my niece or nephew's speech because of NZ accents. He said to send him recordings of their speech. Err, no. Note the 'send'. He didn't ask.
