Trying real hard not to slide into every "switch to firefox" thread this weekend.

They partner with both Google and Cloudflare. Two of the most evil companies on the planet.

They've been caught doing skeezy things on multiple occasion.

macOS & iOS folks: consider switching to and supporting Orion (& Kagi), where at least you're nigh guaranteed to not be the product in some way.

All these "thought leaders" rly need to mebbe lean into the first word in the quoted text for a change.

Since it's unlikely anyone's going to read the newsletter link from today to get the URL for seeing what your Chrome "privacy sandbox" settings are, here's the direct link to the online, checker: https://rud.is/sandbox-check/

If any setting isn't "❌😎” you're eff’d.

adamshostack,

@hrbrmstr you should add that to the page. A checkmark usually means "this is good"

adamshostack,

@hrbrmstr Also, I have disabled many of these per your instructions and still see them as enabled. Thoughts?

@adamshostack @hrbrmstr Did you re-launch the browser? I saw the same until I close/re-opened.

adamshostack,

@DataAngler @hrbrmstr Thanks Sam -- I assumed flags took effect instantly because that's been my experience, but a restart helps

jaredlander,

@hrbrmstr but how do you disable all of those (both desktop and mobile)?

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@jaredlander there’s a link to the section in the newsletter that details that.

@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar
jaredlander,

@hrbrmstr thanks, had trouble finding the newsletter

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@jaredlander As far as mobile goes, I can't help folks who are daft enough to run Android kit. 🙃

windexh8er,

@hrbrmstr Just tested this out real quick - based on the instructions listed I'm not sure the two 'private-state-token' settings are addressed. Pretty easy to find though at: chrome://flags/-state-tokens

Love the checker! You rock. 🎸

@windexh8er updated the section in the newsletter with that info and a link to your mastodon post.

windexh8er,

@hrbrmstr Appreciate the attribution, wasn't necessary though - you're the real MVP! 🏆

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@windexh8er I can add those

hrbrmstr,

@windexh8er @hrbrmstr turns out they're ignoring the setting, now https://mastodon.social/@hrbrmstr/111108387762129199

windexh8er,

@hrbrmstr @hrbrmstr 🤦‍♂️

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@windexh8er @hrbrmstr we'll see if they do what they said they would next Thu.

seinecle,
@seinecle@ioc.exchange avatar

@hrbrmstr they all return ok in my Brave browser

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@seinecle But you have other issues given Brave.

@hrbrmstr Thank you! For my understanding, on iOS, aren’t all browsers dependent on , drastically decreasing the interest of any competitor?

I’m honestly trying hard to live away from , but I still have an and I’m looking for options 😅

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@gaufff yep. we're "stuck" with webkit on iOS (Google has recently sly-tested Chromium on it, likely in a move to try to force Apple to let them bring Chrome over). I use Orion on iOS over any other iOS browser (including Arc's pseudo-browser)

gaufff,
@gaufff@piaille.fr avatar

@hrbrmstr Fully understand. The performance of Orion seems very solid.

I just regret the closed source aspect, and the fact that browsing data is synced in iCloud. But I’ll keep an eye on their development!

Thanks

@gaufff@piaille.fr avatar

@hrbrmstr After a first try, it looks great! Only the cookies consent pop ups… for which my only option for now is to have with .

Am I correct that no other browser on than Safari allows to use an adblocker?

I mean, seems to block a lot of stuff, but no way I can block consent popups with on ?

EDIT: apparently it can!

gaufff,
@gaufff@piaille.fr avatar

@hrbrmstr I just wonder, if Orion can support Firefox extensions, why Firefox themselves don’t support it!

And i hope they quickly go fully

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@gaufff I can't comment more on Firefox without offending alot of folks.

dpendolino,

@hrbrmstr
If Firefox is no better than Chrome/Chromium, do you have a suggestion that supports Linux?

hrbrmstr,

steevmi1,
@steevmi1@freeradical.zone avatar

@hrbrmstr Been a while since I checked in on Arc, they still on the good side?

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@steevmi1 So far. 🤞🏽

raineer,

@hrbrmstr Kagi has a pretty icky stance towards “absolutely no censorship of the web”. I was a subscriber until they started doubling-down on the libertarian approach to indexing the web.

It’s hard to find any options which are squeaky-clean.

hrbrmstr,
@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social avatar

@raineer And, I refuse to trust an org that thinks it's cool-cool to take money from Google and Cloudflare and sell users out to both whilst claiming purity.

I'm rly hoping Arc keeps all the awful Chromium settings disabled.

Danwwilson,

@hrbrmstr @raineer So far so good.
