This should have been a simple operation. Shut the home lab down. Pull the cables out of the back, put in the new pcie cards with the added storage, and then put it all back together. Instead it's been one problem after another and for no reason that I can figure out.

one drive in my jbod enclusure wasn't showing up. Why? Nobody knows. A hard reset (which is just a great thing to do) seemed to have fixed it, but for how long?

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast It has the stench of unreliability. My advice: Don't rely on it.

The online backlash to #Windows #Recall amuses me tremendously. I started building a similar open-source (non-AI, local only) thing for #Linux a month ago.

It would take screenshots and create a timeline video of your day. It also enabled searching across your past usage of the computer.

The inspiration was an open-source macOS app called "Rem" which does the same thing.

Ah well, I guess I'll abandon that then, as it's going to be seen as toxic thanks to #Microsoft.

@popey @alto They are mad because Microsoft can’t be trusted, at least not when it comes to Windows. Every time they get the benefit of the doubt they bend over backwards to prove they didn’t deserve it.

See ads in Windows 11 start menu. See telemetry on Windows 10 and 11. See the forced upgrade campaign for Windows 10 (this is the one that personally broke me of Windows).

Satya and his cronies are hungry for your data. Deny them the pleasure by exercising your right to no longer trust em.

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@tegbains @popey @alto Reminds of that time Canonical thought it would be a good idea to enable Amazon searches directly from the dash in Unity.

May be going to Jellyfin instead of Plex. I cannot for the life of me get it to see all of my TV show files. It seems most, but leaves whole or complete seasons out, despite there being the correct metadata for those shows attached.

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast When you say "it" are you talking about Jellyfin or Plex? I switched to Jellyfin a few years back and I couldn't be happier... but I use it for movies and music only.

Put it off for quite a while but I finally migrated from the deprecated linuxserver/unifi-controller container to the new linuxserver/unifi-network-application container to my unifi control plane.

I got a new switch that required at least unifi 8.1 and i was lagging behind on 8.0.27.

the new network-application requires a mongo db container. no big deal. but i had to export a full site backup and start from a clean slate with the new 8.1 system. no in-place upgrade supported. was fairly painless tbh, just a bit of a pallavah and an exercise in yak shaving i could have done without tonight. #selfhosting

I would only consider any of the upcoming Windows on ARM laptops with the new Qualcomm processors if and only if there is first-tier support for Linux and nothing is locked-down tight re: Secure Boot or TPM.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWH2rHYNj3c

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@qlp Define first tier support. I figure the best case scenario is how Qualcomm supports current mobile SOCs with Linux / Android now and that situation is dismal. Each SOC gets stuck on the same major kernel version.... FOREVER. This of course is why if you look at the sys info on any Qualcomm powered Android device, the kernel lags mainline by a year or two at least.

Fuck that noise.

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@qlp Oh God. Forget Nvidia. I was so happy when their attempt to buy ARM fell through because it probably would've rendered the processor architecture entirely irrelevant for me... outside of iOS devices of course.

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@qlp Love it. RISC-V is the future. For now I'm willing to live with AMD x86.

But yeah I would also love more competition. I miss the days of the ye olde processor wars back in the 90s.

I cannot even tell you how much shit users have taken for years for daring to post instructions containing that step in response to any question ever.

Yet here we are and that's apparently how you do that in MacOS in 2024. To say I'm disappointed would be a severe understatement

There are some highlighted issues from scouring around the mobile stuff, and that is battery life due to not enough optimization and performance that would have been classed as mid 8 years Ago, the former is a software issue while the latter is purely hardware and not one that can easily be fixed.

Do a lot of devs still do their work on Ubuntu 18.04? https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2024/02/vscode-drops-ubuntu-18-04-support-leaves-devs-screwed

I mean it seems like maybe it's time to upgrade? I can see servers still being onn 18.04, but to do actual dev work where you hace to test your code? Maybe something more modern?

JayLittle,
@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Entirely too many people believe that "set it and forget it" is a thing in tech. It ain't. My employer still runs Ubuntu 18.04 and CentOS 7 on servers and I have begged them over and over again to allot us time to upgrade those machines and even offered to do the work myself.

But they just don't care enough to make the time. One day the universe will make them regret these decisions, I just hope on that day it won't be my problem if you catch my drift ;)

That’s 15.5 times larger than Arch Linux…

Over 6.5 times larger than EndeavourOS
Over 5 times larger than Garuda, Linux Mint, Feren OS, Pop!_OS, Fedora, & Zorin
Over 3 times larger than Ubuntu, Manjaro & Debian

Over 2.4 times larger than…WINDOWS 11‽

Yeah MacOS isn't doing so great nowadays. The window management is terrible. The update process is painful. Apple clearly isn't giving it much love.
