Is this allium vineale / wild garlic? Allium oleraceum / field garlic? Or Allium schoenoprasum / #chives?
The last option, chives, is #native to the USA and #PA; the others aren't. I'm growing a native plant garden, so if it's #invasive / introduced, I'll evict it.
When I picked a leaf off the specimen growing out of the wall, it smelled faintly of green #onions, so I'm inclined to believe it is in the onion family.
@acm_redfox I'm willing to uproot one to see what the roots look like if I'm confident that will let me distinguish the species. I don't really want to taste it because it's next to the sidewalk and there are a lot of dogs in our neighborhood.
The second one also looks like an onion when you look at the stems close up, Mastodon just limits you to 4 pics at a time.
@schwinghamer The problem is there are many kinds of weeds like this assaulting my garden, and I can't wait for all of them to flower. Many may not flower until next year, it's late in the season!
I could do the normal thing and kill everything I can't identify, but if it's an aggressive native plant, that's an ally I'd like to leave alone. For example, I've been enjoying the white snakeroot that's feeding all of the pollinators in my main garden, it's dominating my hydrangeas and that's great.
Ok, based on @acm_redfox saying the base doesn't look like chives, and @berz reporting it doesn't taste like chives, I decided to uproot it to see if I could positively ID it. (Thanks for your help!)
The roots look like garlic to me, and someone on iNaturalist used these photos to finally confirm this is wild garlic / allium vineale. Victory!
