I want to get to know all of you a little bit better, so I’m going to start asking some questions. What book or series really got your love of reading started?

MS26,

@evilcookies98 R.L. Stine's Goosebumps for sure. Inspired me to want to write as well.

Pool,

@evilcookies98 I think harry potter did the magic.

EJGilbert,

@evilcookies98 The series that got me to love reading was Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of PERN.

MariahL,

@evilcookies98 I hated reading when I was younger, I remember struggling so hard with grasping the concepts and just not being able to stand the thought of sitting down with a good book... until I fell in love with Harry potter. I was super young when I started the potter books, I think maybe seven or so. Even though I didn't understand all of the concepts at the time Rowling filled in the gaps. I have memories of my cousin bringing me a potter book each time he visited which meant several boxes worth of braille volumes. Also, reading at night when I was supposed to be asleep? Guilty. :) Now I love sitting down with a book whether it be braille or audio of some sort.

dhamlinmusic,

@evilcookies98 No clue that was so long ago.

lulu_bear,

@evilcookies98 This is a tricky one and you'll laugh at the answer. When I was a tiny little girl we had family reader books which taught us to read braille, there were four different families. I was fascninated with them all adn they all came to seem like friends. I also loved braille, loved reading adn couldn't wait to learn fast enough so that I could read other books, so it was really my family readers that made me love to read.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@lulu_bear nothing wrong with that.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 That's easy. the Harry Potter series, followed by Percy Jackson. I loved the Maze runner personally and yes, the babysiters club books when I was in middle school and part of high school. I know those are books meant for pre-teen girls but I didn't care. the stories were interesting. Right now, I'm into magic stuff again and true crime, usually white collar crime because money.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 who cares who it’s meant for. You read what you want. Some of my favorite go to sleep material is stuff. I read when I was about nine.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Yeah, you have a point. The books were nice and easy when i didn't really want to think about much.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I have over 60 on my phone right now, at least 50 of which I’ve already read and uses go to sleep material. The rest is stuff I have to catch up on because I let myself get behind.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 That sure is a lot of books my friend.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 they’re short, which is why I can carry around so many. I like using them to go to sleep, just like I did when I was little and had the Mom CD.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Which books are these?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 promise not to laugh?

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Why would I laugh when you didn't laugh at me?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 because these are literally meant for small children

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Nah, its okay. Hell, I'm 24 and love teddybears.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 OK. Here goes. Between you, me, whoever reads this post, and the phone over here playing the audiobook, I basically have the entire magic treehouse series in my folder right at this moment. Got to fix one of them, because it decided it felt like playing backwards. The story doesn’t make any sense that way.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Oh, I like that series. I've only read a few books but it sure is a nice one.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I read a lot of them when I was little, but I had holes in the series until just a few years ago, because some of the audiobooks were so hard to find. I got my first one from a happy meal and I was hooked. Free advice, if you want to use them to go to sleep, get the commercial version. The narrator from the national library service is too loud, and does not have a particularly soothing voice.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Where would I get the commercial version?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 that really depends on how you prefer to get your books. Audible has them, as does iTunes. If you have a library card check overdrive. I would be surprised if Google play doesn’t have them, although I don’t know that for sure because I don’t know how to check that place for books.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 So, here's the thing. I actually like some not so sootheing voices, especially if its a male narrator. I kind of feel that male narrators of books really aren't as respected as female narrators because they're not as sootheing, especially in the kids section of books. I mean, people don't mind when a man reads about a murder but the moment he reads a kids book its like he's a problem. I don't understand. Oh, and I'm not talking about you specifically, just how people think nowadays.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I get it. There are very few voices I can’t stand when I’m just reading to read, but if I’m reading to go to sleep, it has to be relaxing. Could just be a me thing. Do you have any personal favorites?

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Well, I like the NLS guy who reads the sword of truth series. I also like Jim Dale who reads the Harry Potter series. I am not so good with names.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 that’s OK. I don’t remember the names of 99% of my favorites.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 That's unfortunate, because I'd love to get more books read by certain narrators. Now, I am friends with a narrator but she reads erotic content, very different from what we're discussing.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I would have to go back through my downloaded list to get names. If I know I don’t like a narrators voice. I will either look for the commercial version or get it from bookshare. This is a weird thing about me, but if someone is reading something with multiple characters, I want those characters to have voices. monotone bugs me

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 I agree with you most of the time, except if I just want to imagine what the characters sound like.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 sometimes I can do that, but other times, I have no clue. Something else that irritates me is, if I previously listen to a book read in a certain way, and I have a mental picture of the character from that voice, and then someone else narrates the same book, and makes them sound totally different, my brain starts to cry.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Now that, I totally agree with. It can be hard getting use to a new narrator for a book. It's almost like getting use to a new teacher.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 which could be part of the reason I don’t like the NLS narrator for the books I’m reading right now. She makes all the characters sound like crackheads. The narrators they got to replace her later in the series are better, but it’s still not the same.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 I'd have to listen to it to see. Maybe I'll like her style. After all, I'm broke and can't pay for audible anyway.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 if the set wasn’t so huge, I would say you could borrow mine, on an indefinite basis, but I’m not sure what file service I would use to send 4.51 GB of data. I know it’s not strictly legal, but come on, who the heck hasn’t let a friend borrow a book.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 One-drive, and I have plenty of storage space, also thanks, and I'd probably do the same for a friend too. I know the hardships experienced by not having enough coin.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I accidentally found a loophole in the overdrive system just by copying books to an SD card. They really need to do something about it, but they’ve ignored it since 2014.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 That's their fault IMo. Not yours if you take advantage of it.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 are you kidding me? Who the heck would pass up free books? Basically, the way overdrive works is you check out books from your library and they are automatically removed when your time expires. The loophole comes in when you try to transfer them to a portable player which you are allowed to do. The MP3 files are not encrypted or protected in anyway, and they do not expire. I reported it as soon as I figured out what was going on, but they haven’t fixed it. Sure, they have apps for smart phones and such, but I don’t always want to read on my phone. I’m only doing it right now because I don’t have a reader that will transfer my stuff in less than 2 1/2 hours.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 I don't have an SD card big enough without deleting files. I only have the SD card my stream 2 came with, unfortunately.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 gotcha. I have a couple of 16 GB cards and a 128. I only have a first generation stream right now, and you can’t imagine how much of a paint it is to get stuff onto that thing. USB 1.1, need I say more?

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Oh wow, now that's old stuff.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 my second GEN kind of died after eight years. Mr. charging port finally gave up and went splat, and considering the battery wouldn’t hold a charge either…

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Yep. After 8 years of service, I'm not surprised.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I tend to use things until they physically break or otherwise become unusable.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 At least they last long. My previous computer lasted me 11 ears before kicking the bucket. It was a linovo T430.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 I want one of the new ones, but they cost some thing I don’t have

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Same, and I don't think I wnt to buy it when I already have stuff on my phone.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 honestly, I prefer the SD card. This way, if my phone utterly glitches out in a manner similar to what it did the first weekend I had it, I don’t lose anything. Most of the time SD cards don’t tend to corrupt unless you’re bouncing them around without properly objecting them.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 Yeah, that makes sense.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 it’s about 20 times easier to copy stuff to and from an android, I grant you, but no one wants to sit there for three hours. Re-copying everything when stuff breaks. I’m only posting from the iPhone because the android is doing the very important job of playing my book.

MichiganPal,

@evilcookies98 This is a hard one. The two books that come to mind are Heidi by Johanna Spyri and the first of the Little House series--Little House in the Big Woods.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@MichiganPal I love those

lulu_bear,

@MichiganPal @evilcookies98 I love both those books, especially Heidi.

MichiganPal,

@lulu_bear @evilcookies98 I actually have a copy of "Heidi". A lady who lived in IL was giving away some of her braille books and I got two of them. Those books did survive the apartment flood of a couple of years ago, thank the Lord.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@MichiganPal @lulu_bear I gave away all of the Braille books I had to help some kids in the school system. Those books are expensive in the school didn't want to buy them

glaroc,

@evilcookies98 for me it was the Percy jackson series, that and Witch and Wizzard which was a great series, Mazerunner which I liked but not as much as the other 2, and the Babysitters Club which was my favorite series in Middle school, I read all of those books that I could find on bookshare.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@glaroc I can never have enough books. I wish they made phones with unlimited storage so I could keep all of the books in the world.

glaroc,

@evilcookies98 lol me too, but back then I could payattention long enough to read book after book, now its really hard for me to focus long enough.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@glaroc when someone puts a book in front of me, it’s like a vacation to another world, and that type of vacation doesn’t cost nearly as much as a regular one

glaroc,

@evilcookies98 yep, its the same for me also.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@glaroc if every book is a vacation, I’ve been all over the world and all over history

MichiganPal,

@evilcookies98 @glaroc I feel the same way. Books are trips to other worlds and a release from the current life things one is dealing with.

davidGoldfield,

@evilcookies98 That's hard to answer. I was a Braille reader for as long as I can remember. I probably first learned Braille when I was around four and I don't even remember my first Braille lessons. I've had a love of reading whether they were books for pleasure or books for my classes.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@davidGoldfield I like that. I always keep the first books I fell in love with, even if people do judge me for it. That’s actually why I’m posting from the iPhone. The android is playing one of them right now.

renegaderocker,

@evilcookies98 For me it was the left behind audio dramas, and I can listen to those again and again and it never gets old.
