@RL_Dane being in GrapheneOS I'm pretty bummed about this. I've had to resort to using sandboxed Google Play store to update my apps.

I wish more mainstream app devs published their apps on Fdroid

Ouch. I'm really unconvinced about how safe the sandboxed google play services really are.

I think a that the graphene guys do a lot of questionable PR.
It's a cool ROM, though.

@RL_Dane it's annoying, but not the end of the world for me. I'm not the super paranoid Graphene user, I'm just a curious OS nerd and incessant tinkerer. My so called "threat model" is pretty low level.

It's possible to use a seperate user profile to install sandboxed Google Play and then use adb to move apps across to your main profile. But as far as I'm concerned, that's way too much effort for not much gain.
