We are in a political wasteland https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/12/15/we-are-in-a-political-wasteland/. The Tories are governing n the basis of fantasies, prejudices and lies. And despite the fact that the political right wing have so clearly left reality behind Labour refuses to consider electoral reforms that would prevent such utterly irresponsible people from ever governing again. We are in a political wasteland where hope no longer exists.

jackLondon,

@RichardJMurphy

What electoral reforms? will result in & likely leading groups of far right MPs - and the left is not as good at machine politics as the right so will split & bicker whilst the Right govern - see also Italy, Hungary, Israel.....changing political systems in a world tainted by lies & conspiracy theories will not help by itself

of as much as possible to regional govt might be helpful - electors could compare with their neighbours.

hengymrohebwlad,

@jackLondon @RichardJMurphy No reason why PR should favour the right. Tories already fracturing, so less chance of monolithic RW parties under PR. Progressive vote has always been split, but grown-up attitude to compromise & cooperation under PR would allow centre/left to displace RW Tory monolith. Scottish & Welsh devolved govts elected via PR, but not Tory.

In any case, PR should deliver representative govt e.g. if you want 55% of the seats, you need 55% of the votes, not 45% as under FPTP.

jackLondon,

@hengymrohebwlad @RichardJMurphy

I am unconvinced ..... these are chaotic times and many have drifted to the extremes, right & left. Having to convince enough within a contituency to vote for you excludes the most extreme from parliament.

hengymrohebwlad,

@jackLondon @RichardJMurphy The extreme right is already in parliament. Tories are now advocating policies that used to be restricted to NF/EDL types. And they have abdolute majority in Commons despite getting < 50% of vote.

For example, look at how Tories have shifted to far right on migration, while voters have moved in other direction:

English exceptionalism ("FPTP keeps extremists out of power") stops people recognising that Far Right is already in power in UK.
