It's alive! I've resurrected my iPod!

@killyourfm Where do you buy replacement parts?

I still have the original FireWire model and a last generation iPod.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@jnv Check https://eoe.works/, iFixit, or eBay.

@killyourfm coincidentally, I’ve been getting into iPods lately. I just ordered a refurbished 5.5G from eoe.works.

I’ve been spending all this week getting my media ready to sync to it — I primarily use Plex instead of Apple’s offerings — so it’ll be ready to sync when it arrives.

@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@mike I'm not sure how coincidental it is, honestly. I'm getting the sense there is a "movement" happening (for lack of a better description) with Gen X and Gen Z to go back to retro tech like iPods and flip phones.

I"m gonna check out eoe.works, thanks!

Also: awesome to meet another Plex user! I'm PlexAmp/PlexPass lifetime over here, and loving it. Are you saying you can sync Plex Media Server with your iPod? Because that would be a game-changer for me.

@killyourfm It could be that iPods are about 20 years old, which is when nostalgia starts kicking in.

I might not have picked my words quite right regarding Plex. I typically use Plex for all of my media so a lot of what I’d be syncing to my iPod isn’t in a state where I can easily do so.

I’ve been converting video and addding it to the TV app, converting flac files and importing them to the Apple Music app, and getting my audiobook files into the right format and adding them to the Books app.

@mike Ah, ok. I got a bit prematurely excited :D

Flicked on notifications from you just in case you share your experiences with the 5.5G model from EOE.

majors,

@killyourfm Last time I tried to use mine, the headphone jack seemed like it wasn't working. I ordered a replacement, but managed to break the replacement while installing it. Maybe I'll try again

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@majors Oh that's a bummer. I don't know how expensive that part is for your model, but I'm seeing a lot of working iPods (older Classic models) under $50 on eBay.

hobbsc,
@hobbsc@social.sdf.org avatar

@killyourfm i've got an older one running . i've considered getting the flash card upgrades for them for some time now. good stuff.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@hobbsc I'm looking into both. The flash card upgrades seem really affordable, and pretty simple to install!

I'm gonna keep you all posted with my experiences.

(Did you have any issues installing Rockbox?)

@killyourfm is it just me, or could this photo also work for 🤔

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@robertdalton It's not just you. With the addition of 15 years or so, that message carries an entirely different meaning now...

robertdalton,
@robertdalton@social.lol avatar

@killyourfm that's great 🖖

AdamBishop,
@AdamBishop@floss.social avatar

@killyourfm Ha! 😄👏
... I just plugged one in.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@AdamBishop Is that the Nano model? I'm still (re)learning about all these!

AdamBishop,
@AdamBishop@floss.social avatar

@killyourfm Yes, the 5th generation Nano! Plays videos, games, and has a built-in photo/video camera and mic.

morganist,
@morganist@mastodon.online avatar

@killyourfm
2nd gen nano i believe, one of the models which are infamous for the 'black spot' problem. they're so crammed inside that the battery expands with age and deforms the screen in the middle forming the 'black spot' lol

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@morganist oof. I bet, unlike the Classics, those are a serious challenge to upgrade and repair.

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@killyourfm that's amazing! My iPod classic is long gone, unfortunately, disk died... it's why I bought a Fiio X1 at the time (8 years ago maybe?), which recently died too though, so I'm on a HiFi Walker at the moment and loving it 😁

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@lminiero Those replacement iPod HDDs are still around, and under $20... Just sayin!
