So is this the year of corporations just dropping all pretense and kicking their employees and customers in the ass?

BlackAzizAnansi,
@BlackAzizAnansi@mas.to avatar

It's just amazing how companies went from fake caring to firing everybody, replacing us with shitty AI and then telling all of us to get over it.

@BlackAzizAnansi I've had that neighbor who keeps throwing loud parties all night, and what I've found is that there comes a point where they get so tired of you interrupting their fun and the work they have to do to cosplay as good, thoughtful people that they stop pretending to care. That's where corporations, the Supreme Court, and every conservative in the country are right now: We're done with hiding behind principles and manners, so fuck you, it's not like you can get rid of us.

holyramenempire,

@middleclasstool I think what people don't realize about Middle Americans is that you don't get to do that with us forever. Once you drop the veil of civility here, people are ready to change channels pretty fast on their politicians.

I don't think this is Universally True, or guaranteed, but I do believe that going gloves-off, full-frontal cruelty is sowing the seeds of right-wing failure in the medium term.

@BlackAzizAnansi

JessTheUnstill,

That's why they're actively trying to move us to a system of ignoring the popular will and instituting permanent minority rule.

holyramenempire,

@JessTheUnstill
Ab-so-lu-tly. We are seeing it up close and very personal with, for example, Missouri and Atlanta's wars on initiative petitions and other methods of actual "one person, one vote" democracy.

I am still hopping mad about ten years ago, when Missouri overruled the will of the people and our 2010 puppy mill ban we passed by 40,000 votes.

That's because our country has always been a representational oligarchic kleptocratic plutocracy

Only the extreme rich, greedy, powerful have their vote actually count. The rest? Yeah, no.

JessTheUnstill,

Yes and no. The USA has always been a political pendulum swinging between the factions of plutocrats wanting to seize total control for the wealthy and powerful vs the populists who want equality and justice for everyone.

Remember, our country's history isn't ONLY that of slaveholders, it also includes that of abolitionists. It's not only the robber barrons, it also includes labor unions. It's not just xenophobic racists, it's also the people who have welcomed immigrants and refugees, and celebrated all the beautiful diversity that they bring to us.

Well, see, there's the problem. Conservative/alt-reich/trash are all for heavy gun ownership, and routinely make runs on guns and ammo when a 'libural' (aka near-right for rest of the world) gets elected.

And they have no problem posturing and following through with historical trends of white nationalists.

And given many latte liberal types are against weaponry, means they're up for easy pickings. I mean, hell, there's already 'acceptable levels' of trans attacks.

When this civil war comes, it's not going to be 'North vs South', but rather 'City vs Rural'. And it will make the first one look tame in comparison.

sidereal,

@crankylinuxuser @middleclasstool @BlackAzizAnansi Should be over pretty quickly, then. USA population is 80+% urban and contrary to the stereotype, city people own way more guns than rural people. Rates of ownership in the cities are lower, but there are so many more people in the cities that they end up having way more guns and violence.

There are really not that many rural Americans or conservatives left in this country, it just feels that way because of the media and voter suppression.

sundiesel,

@BlackAzizAnansi don't forget mandates and other shitty behavior to try to make folks quit so corps don't have to pay severance.

183231bcb,

@BlackAzizAnansi They've been trying to replace employees with machines for decades. I don't think this is new.

Drybird227,

@BlackAzizAnansi My theory? They've always done this. Not only that. But they've always done this around this time. It's only a theory...a game..theo...but yeah. I would imagine if some data miner were to look into it.

They'd find that either companies do this regularly after christmas. Whenever a democratic president is in office. Or because another ceo at another company did it. On some monkey see, monkey do shit.

The difference being that this time we noticed. Or rather more people noticed. Probably gravitated to after christmas too. Because there were way too many christmas movies using that in their scripts and people started noticing more. lol

In an all-hands Zoom call in June, my company announced a reorg, which would mean 15% layoffs, but they wouldn’t know who for a few months. Chat blew up with .. normal human reaction to this Sword of Damocles.

Leadership literally said “the comments are making me feel bad” and “YOU NEED TO GET OVER IT”.

Late-stage capitalism seems to be intensifying the correlation between psychopaths and CEOs.

This year I think will be massive layoffs which the GOP will use to attack the economy under democrats. I wonder how many ads will be funded by companies that did massive layoffs.

The GOP will make wild promises to desperate people (with short memories), convincing them to vote for either a third party or for the GOP.

bcdavid,

@Karma_J @BlackAzizAnansi This is clearly the tactic, but also Roe has thrown this whole thing into chaos. We shouldn't have our head in the sand, but at the same time we've seen over the last two years that Roe has completely upended what would be expected results.

Drybird227,

@Karma_J @BlackAzizAnansi And...that shit will work. lol Might not seem like i'm actually laughing at that. Might seem like i shouldn't be laughing at that. But to me it's like absurdist comedy.

All they have to do most times is come up with a slogan. Like do nothing democrats. And the shit spreads far and wide. Ironically....at the exact same time they're screaming that democrats fuck everything up. Which like..you know..nazi germany.

Doesn't matter though. Insane amounts of people not only fall for it. But repeat it. Because they were primed to. Hundreds of years of non-stop propaganda'll do that.

Most people in america: What? There weren't any immigrants at the border when they got there? Weird.

@Karma_J @BlackAzizAnansi the New Yorker is running a story right now about how both sides lack leadership. they're trying to set up this short term memory.

@BlackAzizAnansi I guess when you coast through life without the fear of serious repercussions there’s no need for pretenses. They’ve consolidated enough power to not worry. They’re just trying to suck up every last drop of possibility of ever losing another inch of ground. I guess my only question for them is what happens when 99% of people can’t afford to buy any of their useless shit?
