@popcornreel this is what drives me nuts when people go after other groups for not voting Democrat enough.

If my fellow white people would stop voting GOP there wouldn't be a GOP.

But nah, white people have to tell everybody but themselves what to do.

So many white people are worried about [insert group] not voting against Trump enough when their aunty and uncle are right there wearing MAGA hats at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Who will stand up for immigrants? Almost as much as a desire to destroy the institution of human enslavement* the Republican Party rose in the ashes of the Whig Party as a reaction to anti immigrant thinking of the Democrats and especially the Know Nothings, a proto party that had a little run in the 1850s.

But we all also use computers in order to have this conversation.

I have a Master's Degree in History with a heavy focus on transnational political history and illiberalism.

Dude with "software developer" in his bio thinks he knows more about history and politics AND software development than I do.

I think I'm NOT yet an expert on political history and really unqualified to offer software development opinions.

@TonyStark thanks. It's really stressful and my mom is having a very hard time. I mean, my dad has been in this ICU two or three other times (we've started losing count!), she's a nurse, but I've never seen her like this.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Would be interesting to see how they approach the series. Would they start with Rendezvous? Or go straight to the trilogy sequel?

It'd be cool for Lee to see the project complete. I hope they use him as an advisor--the dude started writing as a side hustle from his legendary work with JPL and NASA.

Worth highlighting this means a black woman is the only person ever to win three consecutive Hugos.

She might be the best world builder out there, Larry Niven is also great, but her character building is top shelf too.

My estimate, based on several analysis, is that the Fediverse is about 3% explicitly antisemitic. This is based on analysis I've done on hate messages across the Fediverse, analysis on my own posts, etc.

Then there's another layer of people who believe antisemitic lies and will spout the, though often they'll do it "carefully" so as not to show the appearance of hate. I have many examples of this. These kinds of people are peddlers of social capital and see that they can get away with advocating violence against Jews in coded language in one post, then be celebrated by saying they "Don't hate anyone" in another- giving cover to their hate.

Finally, there's a huge majority that is simply silent. They don't want to "get involved".

Well as John Mellencamp says "Silence is Complicity".

So, my non-Jewish friends... what about you?

@serge @TonyStark something that's really startled me the last few years is my failure to recognize antisemitism at times.

The most glaring example are villains who are clearly meant to be Jewish. I just didn't see it until pointed out* and it's shaken me that I missed it. I wonder and worry about what wife I'm not recognizing.

*I know the bankers in HP making me uncomfortable--I recognized that on my own--but when they were coming out I shrugged it off. To my shame.

@serge @TonyStark The media issue, to me, is something glaring I should recognize. The fact that I have trouble with it suggests to me other areas I'm missing things.

Humans have shown an incredible and grotesque ability to use labels to convince themselves that the evil they're doing isn't really evil because they stuck a label on something.

@RickiTarr ok. So, kinda. Yes there's always been misinformation. Yes, new technology has always enabled the acceleration of the spread of it.

But Fascsim is only about 100 years old. Racism about 600 years old. So not all of human history for those things.

I did edit to say accelerate instead of allow because that's more what I meant.

But this present moment is different. History doesn't repeat itself.

It does echo as it is now.

If not for the Internet would there be a fascist running The Netherlands and Italy, running for President in France and the United States? Running Russia?

It's impossible to know but the answer is it is highly unlikely.
