@daringfireball@gruber it's a good idea. I type “nba” into Google all the time to get this Material-design looking thing. It's not my favorite look, but the sports sites are all so bad, and at least that one is simple. Cue is right that it's a little slow on the scores, maybe a minute or two of lag.
@daringfireball joined mastodon just to reply to this - please Apple never bundle sports with the OS!! It’s bad enough that news has a sport icon and category I can’t remove, let alone forcing an entire app onto my phone for the topic 🤦♂️
Some people really don’t like sports 🤣
@daringfireball@gruber The use of color in the UI of the Sports app also reminded me a little of the redesign of Apple Health in iOS 17, as well as the increased use of color thoughout the OS in watchOS 10. Will be interesting to see if this becomes more of a trend…
@daringfireball the UI with the cards and tiles is very reminiscent of Apple Books UI. I wonder if this demonstrates a trend toward this style as a common UI interaction model or if these two are special cases.
@mynameisstuart It doesn’t link to gambling apps. It just tells you who’s favored, by how much. Newspapers have printed odds like this for 100 years, and are generally deemed acceptable for children.
@daringfireball “it’s not clear to me at all why Journal, say, is now built into iOS 17 but Sports is only available from the App Store.”
I think it’s the betting odds. I’m not sure that’s allowed in every market/state. Having to download the app is high level opt in. In fact, for people with a gambling problem they should probably be off by default. Maybe even include the “if you have a gambling problem” blurb, too.
@daringfireball You wrote "Apple isn’t listing several major sports leagues — including MLB...". I have MLB listed (location = San Francisco area) which is not in season. I do not have NFL listed. The limitation in listings, for me at least, are not explained by what sports are in season.
@daringfireball great write up as always. I never want the sports app in Apple News because I don’t really want to see political news in general. Also, I like “Sports Alerts” too and use it mostly for the watch complications. When this app has that, I’ll probably delete it too.
@daringfireball Sports Alerts hasn’t been Sherlock’ed yet. There’s so much more robust information there than what’s listed in this new Apple app. Sports Alerts is pretty much on the nose, time-wise, too. Very accurate.
