I’m still seeing this pop-up on my iPhone a few times every week. It feels like it’s been over a year now…

sayrer,

@siracusa I've never seen this. I get a similar one if I’m in the Settings app.

@marcoarment hey I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Air as a “bumming around computer” just like you have one.

Which screen size/specs
do you have? I’m trying to find the episode where you talk about it but am struggling to find it?

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment @ashah I have an M1 16GB Air, and it's fine. It's just getting wear and tear issues at this point (batteries, keyboard, etc). there's nothing wrong with the purchase.

@siracusa @david there are some posts out there on making Dropbox ignore node_modules too. A lot of people I know use it with Git, just letting it sync their working copies without pushing anything. So many big tech people I know do this, it's pretty solid. I used to do it before VS Code SSH got really good.

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa @hoemma yeah, you put the books on them in case the conversation stalls. but the ideal things are oversized (A2 or bigger) and expensive, so you don't want to leave them out all the time. Taschen sells a lot of these:

Hey so is there any USB-C/Thunderbolt HDMI capture card that works for Apple Silicon Macs?

Turns out AVerMedia says in their FAQ they specifically do not support 2K/4K on macOS 🙃

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@fasterthanlime Elgato Cam Link 4K works fine, but that one doesn't have HDMI for the monitor (if you’re capturing a console or something). I can't tell what you need, but check out their stuff.

Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

Update: It was a crap-in-the-port situation.

(thanks, everyone, for pointing me in that direction)
https://mastodon.social/@marcoarment/112354500706301998

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment yeah, that's the most likely thing. I know this one because I have also repaired a phone where there are no Apple stores (but I had to do it). When I brought it to an Apple store later in the year, the manager came out with my phone in a plastic bag and said, nicely, “never bring this phone to any Apple Store ever again”.

The various home remedies suggested can be wrong, because they sometimes need to unscrew the phone to get everything.

My iPhone 15 Pro doesn't hold onto USB-C cables very well anymore, and they always fall out or flake out.

(And I only use the USB-C port for Xcode and travel charging, so it's not from overuse.)

Anyone else have this happen? Is this most likely a "crap in the port” 5-minute-fix-at-an-Apple-store situation, or a hardware-repair I'll-be-without-my-phone-for-some-days-and-need-to-move-into-an-old-one situation?

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment pocket lint, you can just go to any random place and get it fixed. I just did it for $20. Don’t let them change any parts, Apple for that, but they can tell you by pointing a flashlight at it when you drop it off.

I'm considering building a feature for a SaaS app that lets you "invite" a customer support person to be able to see your private data in order to help you debug an issue - where everything they look at is logged in an audit log that's visible to you and you also get to see when they "resign" from their temporary access

Is this a common feature? Has anyone seen good implementations of this kind of pattern before?

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@simon yes, everything has this. maybe Shopify is the most common example. It gets into trouble when there’s E2E encryption.

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@robcee @luis_in_brief @ia I don’t really have an iPad answer there, but I can tell you about the dark side on the Mac. I use VS Code SSH, and everything but the UI runs on a Linux tower that I never look at.

It's absolutely possible. But millions of people had strong reasons to use iPhones even before there were any apps, and then also before the apps were plentiful or compelling.

The customers were already there.

The challenge Apple faces with AVP is getting enough people to buy (and keep using) a device type that they weren't already buying (headsets), which is VERY expensive and limited, to accumulate enough customers for the content and software ecosystem to develop.

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment @DrewTheLoud They do have a bootstrapping problem, but it's probably tough to negotiate the deals without showing off the device. I bet you could map it out by looking at the broadcast negotiations. NBA is going to expire soon, there's the 2026 World Cup, etc.

Okay, here's a #Prince story for you: At this moment, on this night in 1984, Prince walked into Sunset Sound studios, and walked out 36 hours later having produced, arranged, composed and performed the entirety of When Doves Cry. 10 weeks later, it was released as a single. It became a Prince's first number one song, the biggest song of the year, and one of the greatest pop singles of all time. He was 26 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG3VcCAlUgE

Lit reviewing "developer experience" as a construct and earliest thing I found in initial search is from Fagerholm and Münch(2012):

F. Fagerholm and J. Münch, "Developer experience: Concept and definition," 2012 International Conference on Software and System Process (ICSSP), Zurich, Switzerland, 2012, pp. 73-77, doi: 10.1109/ICSSP.2012.6225984.

It doesn't reference any existing literature on developer experience. Google ngram also shows a HUGE spike in "developer experience" mentions in 2013.

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@KFosterMarks yeah, but it was usually called “customer acceptance" earlier on.

@daringfireball @gruber it's a good idea. I type “nba” into Google all the time to get this Material-design looking thing. It's not my favorite look, but the sports sites are all so bad, and at least that one is simple. Cue is right that it's a little slow on the scores, maybe a minute or two of lag.
