No joke I think you could make a fortune running summer camps for adults. I'd happily lie in a sleeping bag on the top bunk listening to rain pittering on the roof while we wonder which of the counselors are in loooove. Also, archery

@ElleGray arts & crafts and s'mores please!

holyramenempire,

@ElleGray They have them, but they're for rich folks :( e.g. this one is $950 for a three day weekend, and looks like a superspreader event: https://www.campnocounselors.com/adult-summer-camps

I want to run a hermit retreat and summer camp (different areas of the same property) for regular people!

Catiearms,

@ElleGray Here are some folx I know who are starting camps for adults. They do youth stuff too, but they’re also working to really create greate adult camp experiences.

@ElleGray r u familiar with family camps? Every year my family heads to the Sierras for a week. Our kids do their thing, we do ours. And it’s basically that. Incl archery. But no rain, ‘cause California.

@ElleGray We go to: https://alumni.berkeley.edu/camp-at-the-lair/family-camp/
there are also family camps affiliated with cities around here. Berkeley has two (https://berkeleyca.gov/community-recreation/parks-recreation/camps/overnight-camps), Oakland has Feather River (https://featherrivercamp.com/), and San Francisco has Camp Mather (https://sfrecpark.org/443/Camp-Mather).

@ElleGray Our generation’s childhood was so structured that we really have a hard time experiencing unscheduled freedom, don’t we?

ElleGray,
@ElleGray@mstdn.social avatar

@WhiteCatTamer no. Not at all. This is just about a one week summer camp 😄

@ElleGray
One night each summer I host an overnighter for friends at our undeveloped property about 20 miles outside of town. They bring tents, water, food, etc. We provide a porta potty, a fire pit, and firewood.

I turn our makeshift trails in interpretive trails with signs to point out evidence of beavers, "the mossy knoll," labels for some flora, and special little gnomes hidden in hollow tree trunks.

I bring binoculars to view the osprey nest.

Last year, we decided to add arts and crafts. I pulled a bunch of long straight cedar branches from the trails and provided knives, leather, beads, etc. to carve and decorate walking sticks for guests to take home. It was very popular!

The evening always ends with a big bonfire. The next morning I warm up breakfast sandwiches on the grill and we have drink cold brew coffee in the sun.

Based on my experience doing this for about 8 years, I believe an adult summer camp would be popular.

@ElleGray Im 99% sure that rain gives our black cat Blitz PTSD. Whenever it rains at night, he gets on the coffee table and stares up at the skylight where he hears it... but only sees himself.

For all the bad luck that black cats are stereotypically associated with by most people... he must be the most cursed black cat.

@FlyVapen_Pikk oh, poor Blitz 🤗
