I was going to make a pixelfed account but i think I'll wait. The creator is pushing towards extremely small communities (The default is 1.000 users). I truly believe that the idea of smaller communities being better for the fedi is actually hurting it. Negating the natural evolution of a community is never going to work.

the user limit encourages people to host more servers, which means there will be more decentralization.
A community doesn't need to stick to just one instance.
Big communities can get difficult to manage. At the start of the twitter migration (I think it was the start at least) there were a few mastodon instances that couldn't handle the amount of new users and had to shut down.
A user limit mitigates that problem

@Haijo7 That's a totally fair point. That said, i think we should try to balance things a little bit. For example, while this improves decentralization, it hurts people like me who only use local timelines cause we are into a specific topic and don't want to see stuff not related to it. In my case, for mental health. 1.000 users is too few, in my opinion. I'm okay with keeping an eye on the issue, but maybe not TOO much restrictions.

iirc pleroma has a feature for admins to select what remote instances should also populate the local timeline. I'm not sure if pixelfed has this feature. If it does, that would resolve the problem i think
