when I browse online secondhand clothing shops, part of my process includes checking if the item is made of natural fibres so that a) it's not obnoxious to wear, and b) it will be suitable to be downcycled as a cleaning rag later. Sad, limp polyester is just… not ideal, at any point in its lifecyle. It's depressing, because there's so much of it, and it's so cheap… but I just don't really want to pay for the privilege of finally being the person to chuck it in landfill.
