Did someone call my Wilderness First Aid into the cops? Yes, yes, at least 3 people did in panic. We relocated elsewhere shortly after this. 🙃😂 (students get an "A" in "looking like a victim in need for first aid")
@ai6yr
A while back, an elderly neighbor had to check something out in his front yard next to the highway. He laid down to check, and several passersby called in a "man down." 😁
@dougfir@ai6yr Last night my scanner picked up a call to the local fire department: full structure fire, smoke billowing from the windows, called in by a passing motorist.
I saw the trucks fly by my house and heard them rushing to the scene over the scanner.
A few minutes later the call came over the radio from the chief: “Dispatch, cancel this call. Structure is a sugarhouse and they’re just boiling.”
@ai6yr@dougfir Yeah, one of the cool things about sugaring is seeing the massive amounts of liquid that are boiled off. When a sugar house is going at full boil, the white clouds of steam billow out of the small cupola vents at the top of the roofline. It’s really beautiful and iconic of New England spring.
@JosephAndriano@dougfir I grew some sugarcane one and made my own molasses (just a tiny amount), that is an INCREDIBLE amount of work. I guess they used to use all the leftover branches and leaves and whatnot (bagasse) for power plants in Hawaii and the Caribbean. I imagine the amount of liquid to be extracted in a sugar house is similar...
An entire station full of cops was called on me one time when I followed my coach's instruction to take the rifle and spotting scope from the armory to the indoor range one block away. I suppose they took it seriously because Lester Maddox was being sworn in a few blocks beyond there; neither of us had thought about that. Poor Lester! I spilled chocolate milk on him once quite by accident. He was very good about it.
@glightly LOL, campus police. The most exciting Saturday they've had in awhile, plus a real medical call later. (normally there is no one on campus on Saturdays, but someone scheduled an event here near where I hold class... I guess my first aid scenario was too realistic for passers by, ha ha).
