Aha! Have carpet and the contractors are finishing off the house, finally... time to go rekey the house! (not that house locks are not easily picked, but 🤷 ). Now, to get everything moved back into the house (and then on to sorting it all out).

@ai6yr Oh, I get that it's not over yet, but it must be a relief to have the contractor part done.

How can I, as an adult American, get better at geography?

Today @berz schooled me when I wanted to discuss genocide in Tigray, but I guessed incorrectly the country it took place in (Ethiopia). Yes, I have difficulty distinguishing countries in Africa, and no, I'm not proud of it.

I've tried playing geography games like Globle: https://globle-game.com/

That helps me recognize countries on the map, but no details about them stick in my head as a result (such as where war crimes took place).

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@skyfaller Americans don't get taught enough geography, but there's also the fact that political boundaries do change over time. Sometimes you might know what it was before but not be caught up on how it's changed since. I'm still fuzzy on that part of East Africa, on the post- Bosnian War, post-Kosovo War, and other post-USSR breakup lines.

Keeping up on political boundaries involves reading news combined with Wikipedia. It also helps to have a diverse feed on social media.

But there's more

Oxalis is underrated as a landscaping plant! The bees love it. Edible (in small quantities... though probably wouldn't eat these, the dog also likes marking it, ha ha)

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Despite the leaf shape, it's not clover, but Oxalis pes-caprae - sourgrass. You can eat it, but should do so in moderation as it has oxalic acid, which can mess with digestion and also contribute to kidney stone formation.

"It was an August day in Lake Elsinore amid an excessive heat warning when 12-year-old Yahushua Robinson — who had been instructed to run — died during P.E. class.

Now, a coroner’s report has reportedly found that the boy died of a heart defect, and that heat and physical exertion were contributing factors."

@ddp How sad that to get abled people to care about this, it so often has to be framed in economic terms, rather than in terms of what it really means for the actual human beings who've been thrown to the wolves by systemic and capitalism in so much of the world's public health response.

I need to go take a picture of the trashed van for sale up the street here, perfect for that Chris Farley skit. (they want $2K for it... dunno if it runs, even). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv2VIEY9-A8

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr The van market is so hot right now that people really are selling rusting, moss-ridden old vans from their backyards...no clean up at all. And they probably do manage to sell them.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@quartzcity Too bad it's not the opposite way because where you'd really make $ is selling a no-rust CA van back East.

@ai6yr It would certainly be nice to have a way to 3D print without using plastic. I guess it depends on how toxic the binders for the wood products are...

"That sign doesn't apply to me because I'm seeking profit" strikes again.

I've emailed in flagrante delicto photos of businesses flouting the law, but our business-owner city councilman (and now mayor) does not feel like holding business people to the same standards as poor people.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

I've emailed the city about this phenomenon over and over. Today I'm finally cc'ing the League of American Bicyclists (who hand out the "Bike-Friendly" designation that City of Davis has), the city's Bicycling, Transportation & Street Safety Commission, and the local newspapers. I'm tired of them dicking around on this.

I've explicitly pointed out that businesses need to be held accountable for the behavior of their vendors and the wear-and-tear damage they're creating to public property.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@nix It has been effective in getting the parking patrol to temporarily beef up patrolling in this area they usually ignore.

We'll see if I can get them to get serious about a real solution. This is why I'm cc'ing LAB, and the local newspapers. It's too easy for city council members (who are usually business owners) to blow me off since I'm not arriving at city council mtgs with a posse to yell at them. I have to find other ways to apply pressure.

But photo evidence definitely helps.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@nix Thanks.

Yes, this is why it is important for folks to speak up more often. They assume everyone is fine with it if folks don't speak up.

Although, sadly, many have such low expectations now that they are "fine" with it.

@nix Yup. It shouldn't have to require residents to have to constantly be after their elected representatives.

Our backs are bowed under the weight of duties that politicians and corporations are ducking responsibility for. We have to do our own jobs, then get forced to do theirs as well.

@firephoto @msquebanh I've seen just a few species with purple pollen. Not sure which you have near you. In LA, its Phacelia https://nhm.org/stories/purple-pollen-eaters-honeybees-love-affair-phacelia

This European-focused guide to pollen colors doesn't include purple, though. https://www.mybeeline.co/en/p/pollen-identification-color-guide

@msquebanh The flowers are very small (despite what the photo has you thinking), but it's cool. It's too hot to grow in SoCal, but this nursery is more for SF Bay Area and PNW (if you feel okay growing introduced plants).
