It still blows my mind that 99% of monitors out there still have lower resolution than Apple and LG's 21" monitor from 2016. Refresh rate is cool, but cmon, Obama was still president back then

ethanbrookins,

@christianselig Haha that’s one reason I specifically looked for a used one of this exact model a couple years ago. Found one on Craigslist for $100. Some very slight magenta vingetting, but otherwise still works and looks great!

primalanomaly,
@primalanomaly@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig it sucks that Apple are basically the only ones making 5k and 6k monitors - we really need some great competitors to Apple’s displays!

@christianselig it’s infuriating

@christianselig yeah my gfx card has it's hands full with the pixels I already have thanks

@alexhammy what if I told you some people use their computers for things other than gaming

twoframesperminute, (edited )

@christianselig I'm still baffled by the fact nobody mentions the pixel density (ppi) of monitors. Even those list of ‘best monitors for Apple customers’ (e.g. https://9to5mac.com/2024/03/13/thunderbolt-monitors/) don't mention them. When I’m buying a monitor, I'm interested in 1) how large it is and 2) how sharp it is. I don't want to calculate 2 myself.

Resolution is only interesting if you consume a single type of content on it. It makes sense for TVs when content comes in HD or 4K, but not for computer monitor.

leeloo,

@christianselig
And how beefy a graphics card would you need to get the full framerate on that kind of monitor?

Niches like graphics design and CAD probably aren't enough to make it worthwhile to produce them, and gamers are more interested in frames per second than resolution.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@leeloo There are other uses for monitors than gaming, see just about every Mac user for instance

grork,
@grork@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I have two of these, either side of an XDR. It (almost) hits the sweet spot of triple mon without being too wide. Wings are perfect for email / slack / docs, with ‘action’ happening on the Big Boi in the middle.

Tracking these down, bidding on eBay, and then ALSO finding the VESA adapters was a challenge.

_spiffy,

@christianselig I can't imagine having the horsepower to game at 4k back then!

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@_spiffy It might surprise you that some people use their monitors for things other than gaming :p

_spiffy,

@christianselig Of course! But I can imagine they cost a small fortune. Turns out, cheap stuff makes the world go round. Probably why most people are still using sub 4k monitors! I still don't have a 4k monitor just 3440x1440 UW and 2k Portrait(and I bought the cheap ones).

bigzaphod,
@bigzaphod@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig the monitor situation is absolutely ridiculous. I went through this recently due to a kid destroying his 24" LG UltraFine (by accident) and complained here about it and was told by several people that you "don't need 4K at 24 inches" and other such nonsense from people who clearly have never used it.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod Yeah I'd try to pick up a refurb 24" LG at this point, still seems to be a few kicking around

ikenndac,
@ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod @christianselig Not helping us Mac users is that Windows' scaling is much better than macOS at non-integer scales (i.e., @ 2x) for modern Windows apps.

A 27" 4K monitor is a much better experience on Windows than Mac, since you can run Windows at 1.5x and it doesn't look like a gross blurry mess (and Windows still has subpixel antialiasing for text rendering). I bet that contributes to the lack of monitors with the super-high pixel density needed for macOS.

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

@ikenndac @bigzaphod @christianselig I mean, 27” 4K doesn’t look all that bad running scaled. Not as good as 5K but close enough that I no longer think 5K is worth the extra money

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@pilky @ikenndac @bigzaphod I find doing design work is when I notice it the most. Coding is fine, but on scaled monitors I've found myself wondering why edges aren't pixel sharp when I realize it's because they can't be on those types of monitors

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @ikenndac @bigzaphod The trick I’ve found there is to up the sharpness setting on the monitor. It helps to correct the blurriness issues. Isn’t perfect, but when I could get three 4K 120+Hz monitors for the price of one 5K it’s close enough for my eye (and wallet 😛)

ctietze,
@ctietze@mastodon.social avatar

@ikenndac @bigzaphod @christianselig DHH would disagree because 1.5x scaling supposedly looks atrocious and Windows users should switch to 2x as well
https://world.hey.com/dhh/fonts-don-t-have-to-look-awful-on-windows-564c9d2f

But I'm on 1x on my main Mac display, what do I know :)

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze @ikenndac @bigzaphod If DHH disagrees with you you're probably right

ctietze,
@ctietze@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @ikenndac @bigzaphod wait, does that mean Windows can't render fonts beautifully then, or that 1.5x scaling is not bad, or that Windows is not a good alternative, or ... -- where does one even start :)

macguru17,

@ctietze @christianselig @ikenndac @bigzaphod fonts are vector nowadays, so any resolution increase should make them look better to the eye… 1x < 1.5x < 2x.

What most people don’t know is that macOS used to have fractional zoom - 1.25x, 1.5x, etc before retina became mainstream. The problem was not with fonts though but with everything else that got blurry and choppy. Curious how windows solves this tbh…

ctietze,
@ctietze@mastodon.social avatar

@macguru17 @christianselig @ikenndac @bigzaphod IIRC, Windows embraces the flat design more. Looked like it on a family member's machine at least, so you wouldn't get 1.25 or 1.5 pixel wide lines that blur and shimmer around, but crisp outlines. Either way I was quite impressed and jealous :)

erikschmidt,

@christianselig and not every monitor has USB-C upstream which narrows the selection of monitors to choose from for work (for me personally)

jvnknvlgl,

@christianselig I just want a 24” 4K monitor, but that simply doesn’t seem to exist…

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar
jvnknvlgl,

@christianselig the thing is that I’m very used to the size of a 24” monitor now, so ideally I want to have just that but now with scaling set to 200%. On the other hand, I also absolutely love the tiny bezels of my Dell UltraSharp U2414H, so until there’s something that has both of these features I’m not going to bother upgrading.

Vorsos,
@Vorsos@beige.party avatar

@christianselig New at CES 2024, bright OLED monitors with perfect color and superhuman refresh rates! Only available in goofy-ass 2.5K resolution.

geomaster337,

@Vorsos @christianselig they’re available in 4K and higher now, thankfully! This was a pretty recent development with the release of DisplayPort 2.1 and DSC improvements

Vorsos,
@Vorsos@beige.party avatar

@geomaster337 @christianselig Finally. If I was shopping, the Dell AW3225QF looks free of compromises, and is curved gently enough I might forget it is curved after a while.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Vorsos @geomaster337 Imo the one compromise would be that Dell has some of the most aggressive matte coatings I've ever seen so that always trips me up on Dells
