@davidho@nyrath hypothetically, if I was world-building for hard sci-fi and I wanted a planet with completely separated oceans, what would the climate be like?
I guess the oceans could be really different environments from each other.
@swope@davidho@nyrath They would have to have a balanced rain-evaporation ratio, or else the rain deficient ones would become dead seas. A rain-surplus basin would expand either until it reached equilibrium or else overflowed.
@60sRefugee@davidho@nyrath I would think the total evaporation from a sea would increase as it's surface area increases, so there should be a stable equilibrium. Surely it's a difficult system to model.
@davidho agreed. many seas, one ocean. pointless to use term ocean as if it were merely a sea. its like how Internet means the network of all network. Internet is to networks (LANs, WANs etc) as ocean is to seas
@synlogic@davidho Fascinating! (And the “Internet” argument resonates with me given what I do and who I work for 😃).
And yet in all the globes that adorn my office, they specifically label different “oceans”, i.e. Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, etc.
Giving rise to the thinking that they are separate, when in fact they are all interconnected.
