It's weird to me why companies like Uber or Airbnb or Spotify are considered "tech companies".
What tech do they develop? Their own app & website? By that logic any modern business is a tech company.
Hell, even schools or libraries have websites and apps. Are they tech companies? Of course not. It just makes no sense.
Uber does taxis. Airbnb does amateur hotels. Spotify does music. The fact they use tech to make that happen doesn't matter, literally everyone does that in the 21st century.
@Tijn it’s typically a label for companies who own none of their own assets in the sector they operate in. AirBnB owns no hotels but operates an accomodation business, Uber owns no vehicles* yet operates a taxi service, Spotify owns no audio yet sells you music.
But completely agree they all operate just to screw the gigworker or artist at the bottom just to make VCs money in the process.
@Shawn what annoys me most is they're supposedly a "tech company" yet they don't actually have any tech on offer which I can use.
All I can do is sign up with their website and use their service. Whoopdeedoo. That's not tech, that's just how people interact in the 21st century.
It's imho very different from the "real" tech companies (Intel, IBM, Nvidia, Apple, Oracle, etc). They actually sell you tech which can you use as you please to build whatever. You know, software, hardware. That's tech.
@Tijn tbh it's probably just how the companies operate. they incorporate as app builders and take a lot of vc cash and make no profits for years like pre 2010 tech companies did
@Tijn I think these days "tech company" means "company that uses tech to circumvent tax or other legislation". Schools and libraries don't do this, hence not tech companies.
