OK, this was too niche, even for Mastodon

Here are the answers
Number 1 - Ukraine 🇺🇦 - 109 , 36.7m people, 2.97 per million inhabitants
2 - Estonia 🇪🇪 - 2 Towers, 1.3m people, 1.54 per million
3 - Lithuania 🇱🇹 - 4 Towers, 2.7m people, 1.48 per million
4 - Macau 🇲🇴 - 1 Tower, 0.7m people, 1.43 per million
5 - Armenia 🇦🇲 - 3 Towers, 2.8m people, 1.07 per million

France 🇫🇷 has a paltry 39 towers, so just 0.6 per million

@jon That seems a little excessive by Ukraine. Any idea how many went up since independence? Or are they all from the Russian Empire era?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@timrichards oh it’s gone up in the past 12 months! There’s a metal works churning them out. I’d be surprised if any were from before 1990.

@jon Yep I can't imagine people popping up Eiffel Towers in the Soviet Union era. Interesting; must be a symbol of drawing closer to the West.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@timrichards Yes. Although there are a good few in the occupied parts too. And a reasonable number in Russia as well. This symbol of deluxe western modernity has appeal somehow. (I’ll eventually write more on the motivation of people to build these towers)

@timrichards @jon Or alternatively, a way of saying that there is no need to go to the decadent West, as socialism can provide everything including its iconic monuments. Or perhaps they were commissioned to set the mood for driving the Soviet people’s champagne that Stalin ordered the development of.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@acb @timrichards No, in Russia too they're pretty much all from the 1990s or later as well. And one in the middle of Siberia somewhere was demolished by the city council because France was backing Ukraine in the war.

@jon@gruene.social avatar

@acb @timrichards Although I admit why Iran then allowed a massive Eiffel Tower at Kish is then, for these sorts of reasons, rather odd. But this does not always make sense.

@jon Ukraine?! What. 🤯

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@apicultor It’s pretty amazing. There are likely at least another 30 towers there that I’ve not been able to map as well.

@jon
…and if you include bridges?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@ArnimRanthoron I can’t map everything Eiffel 🙂
