★ From the Department of Spending Tim Cook’s Money: Online Photo Storage Is Surely Expensive to Offer, but Apple Should Offer More

@daringfireball @gruber Wouldn't you think that Apple has done the math? Given the number of phones when they introduced the 5GB storage back in 2011 and how many there are today. It's a lot more now and I figure marketshare has more or less plateaued or at least predictable.

And figure not everyone will pay for upgraded storage, heck I know people still won't buy apps, let alone store precious photos.

It seems more egregious they don't up the free default tier.

@daringfireball @gruber as someone using ~300 GB of storage right now, it’s also pretty frustrating that there’s no plan between the $3 for 200 GB and $10 for 2 TB ones.

@daringfireball @gruber The first footnote in the article points to the wrong footnote (that of a different article)

@daringfireball I've always felt like the the default is so low because and the first tier so cheap because the $1 monthly charge was for Apple to be sure that a majority of the people will keep an active credit card on file. By simply having it there, it reduces friction for other IAP and buys.

If the lowest/default amount is something like 20GB or 50GB, I think that significantly reduces the amount of credit cards on file because it covers many more use cases.

@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@stucki Maybe that’s a factor? But man 5 GB has to change entirely, right?

@daringfireball Surely you mean for the masses iCloud backup is the only

[Update: Added a footnote, wondering whether it's the paucity of storage available in the typical user's iCloud account that explains why new iPhones still default to shooting 1080p rather than 4K for video.]

@daringfireball shouldn’t there also be a footnote that the prices mentioned were for monthly plans but unlike Apple, Google offers yearly plans that save 16%.

That brings down google plans to

$1.70 - 100GB
$2.50 - 200GB
$8.30 - 2TB

Since we are talking about long term storage needs, I’d certainly do a yearly plan to save money if Apple offered it.

@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@daringfireball I guess that's not (only) that. 1080p is enough quality for most purposes, it's also less energetically expensive to record (longer record time), better light condition. People also usually record very short bursts of videos, not fully featured movies.

I use 4K only for special occasions, like if I know I'll be recording in some longer session.

Strwpok,
@Strwpok@mastodon.world avatar

@daringfireball I’ve never understood this argument. If someone doesn’t want to pay 99p to backup their stuff to iCloud, that’s their choice. Leave them alone.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Strwpok That's only true for informed, technically knowledge uses. Most users aren’t.

@mikeagore@mastodon.social avatar

@daringfireball I think your numbers on video storage for an iPhone 4S are off because I think you’re not accounting for the newer formats. If you switch your formats on a current iPhone to “Most Compatible” it’s more like 130 MB per minute for 1080p30. I don’t think the 4S supported HEVC

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@mikeagore That's a good point. Updated. Thanks!
