Just had a minor brain fart and: Is New Zealand called that because it’s a New Sea Land?

@harshil isn’t it based off the Dutch “zeeland”?

Just like York and Hampshire

@nikhil Yeah TIL! It’s just so weird that the New is anglicised but the Zeeland is kept as is though

@harshil @nikhil Newfoundland is actually just named after those 3 English words, which is probably why there’s no space and we pronounce it differently.

Update after some quick Wikipedia-ing: Turns out some Dutch mfs named it Nova Zeelandia after a province called Zeeland, which, it turns out, is Dutch for Sea Land indeed

So it’s not New Sea Land, but rather New Sealand

I should’ve known better. Any time you see something that looks like English but spelled sillier, chances are it’s the Dutch

@harshil Australia is named after “Terre Australe” from the French

@layoutSubviews @harshil this was a great documentary about how Europeans named all the exotic places https://youtu.be/Df-uemc-e3w?si=CP_EbSLE0QDng5t9
