I would say it exemplifies the fact that he was suffering from the very doom porn he criticizes. Being aware doesn't make one immune.
It's tragic that he did this, and ultimately it undermines his point that we're not powerless and there's a lot we can do to change things.
That doesn't necessarily mean that every action is a good one, and clearly this isn't a good example of one.
To make things worse, I think this stunt undermines what appears to be a lot of decent research, that can now be even easier to dismiss as wholesale insanity.

Truth is not enough.
Especially when that truth is the results of carefully crafted state propaganda, designed to make you feel hopeless!
Where ever I encounter stuff like this, I am reminded that, this is the war being wages on everyone who does not believe Jesus is their savior in THIS life and the next.
