And now for what feels like the millionth time in my career with computers I type into google "useradd adduser difference"

I am creating a loginless dummy user to own a persistent service. His voice resounding from the deep past, a man from Sun Microsystems asks me, of this ghost, this fiction I wish to create, what their room number, work phone, and home phone are.

@mcc the man with the .plan

@flyingsaceur I imagine him bent over a scribe's desk, scratching my responses into parchment.

@mcc once I followed the echoes behind that voice, and it pulled me back, back, racing through the office plan at Sun, back, through the corridors at Bell Labs, and I finally ended up in an office at General Electric, some 60 years ago.

@hisham_hm Holy shit

mgedmin,

@mcc adduser --system myservice FTW

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@mgedmin That looks like what I want but I notice that the definition of --system in the manpage is "adds a system user or group" and it doesn't explain what that means

@mcc

Gack! Is it... Scott McNealy?

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@tuban_muzuru "Ian Murdock", according to the man page. But unbeknownst to me he was only reimplementing an older interface

machineyearning,

@mcc A client had a service account who's place of birth was listed as "Pennsylvania". Place of birth was not required. Nothing else was filled out. I assume someone just looked at the brand new service account and said "You know what? it's giving born in Pennsylvania" and then just chose not to elaborate.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@machineyearning You know, if you picked a random spot in Pennsylvania, it would probably not be part of any incorporated town or city. So we can assume most Pennsylvanians were born in "just Pennsylvania". That's what the math tells us

SpuriousInterrupt,

@mcc I'm doing this all the time on ubuntu systems, but apparently tumbleweed, which I switched to recently on this specific machine, doesn't even have adduser installed by default, which I guess sort of solves the problem?

@mcc just use vipw

@mcc I saw this on an infographic poster titled "stop doing multiuser systems."
