This isn't good, folks.
I'm not worried about H5N1 transmission to humans (yet) but the USDA pathetic lack of transparency, how long it took for the genomes to be released, lack of testing asymptomatic cattle......
All detracts from "confidence"

@erictopol I would argue it actually may not be bad. Gorcery store milk is pasteurized, killing influenza. Ingesting the antigens left behind is probably completely harmless, and may actually act a bit like a vaccine, exposing us to the viral epitopes without catching the virus.

@mcnado @erictopol I was wondering if pasteurization would kill it, but didn't actually look it up. Thanks!

@TheJen @erictopol not exactly milk as the solution, but decent data showing viral inactivation by pasteurization across a wide variety of viruses including influenza

@mcnado @erictopol Excellent. I figured it might, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the link. It's in practically every herd here in NM already. :(

@erictopol

we also have Leana Wen no-big-dealing a virus (with a 50% kill rate!!) so far just like she did with COVID.

@erictopol

  1. "Particles of virus" have been found
  2. Because pasteurization kills it
  3. This is a preliminary report
  4. Testing continues

https://www.statnews.com/2024/04/23/h5n1-bird-flu-virus-particles-in-pasteurized-milk-fda/

It's likely the FDA isn't saying anything definitive yet is that they're still testing. Stop drinking milk if you're worried, but also let's not freak out until there's something to freak out about.

@ralfmaximus @erictopol We don’t pasteurize beef though. Do you think there’s some magic keeping it in dairy cattle, but not beef cattle?

I think they’re not telling us something that would destroy an industry. How do you like your steak?

@Extra_Special_Carbon @ralfmaximus @erictopol

"As for beef, the U.S. cattle outbreaks are confined to dairy-producing cows, at least for now."

Extra_Special_Carbon,
@Extra_Special_Carbon@mastodon.world avatar

@shaknais @ralfmaximus @erictopol Yes, I’ve read that, and I think that’s very suspect. You can’t find what you don’t test for. I wonder how many herds they’ve tested. Testing is voluntary even for dairy cattle.

Remember how meat packers worked with COVID? Yeah, they think spreading disease is a laugh as long as they get their profits.

shaknais,
@shaknais@mastodon.social avatar

@Extra_Special_Carbon Right now, it looks like it spreads via the milk, not by air transmission. (https://doi.org/10.1126/science.zq8xjll)

Right now, it seems that cows have natural immunities that make it appearing in the beef very unlikely. (https://doi.org/10.3390%2Fv11060561)

Scientists were screaming about Covid. They're not about the cows.

Heat kills virus. Properly cook that steak and it'll be fine. 158F / 70C
