dav1d,

you’re a programmer? name every programming language

the_wiggler,

@mcc @dav1d what is bash? Or regex?

This is a fun game.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@the_wiggler @dav1d Bash is Python.

Regular expressions are not turing complete. Unless it's perlre. Which is perl. Which is Bash. Which is Python.

@mcc choosing violence?

@mcc @dav1d Lisp doesn't get on here? I'm sad.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@Elucidating @dav1d lisp is python

Elucidating,
@Elucidating@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @dav1d I had so many sweaty arguments on the LL mailing of with Guido over this. Thanks, we both hate it.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@Elucidating @dav1d its just python with lists* instead of dictionaries

  • lisp actually doesn't have lists, only binary trees, but you seem annoyed enough already so i'm going to use the lisp terminology here

@mcc @dav1d I use datalog in biscuit. Does that count?

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@clementd @dav1d look with all due respect those five words sound as fake as a sentence about programming can possibly sound

danmodp,
@danmodp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@mcc @dav1d which one is c++

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@danmodp @dav1d python but it crashes

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@mcc @danmodp @dav1d isn't C++ just asm but with more intricate syntax andb for a machine that doesn't actually exist?

thias,
@thias@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @dav1d Python is just pretty Perl. ASM is a myriad of different things. I would say the languages are Smalltalk, Forth and Haskell.

qlp,
@qlp@linh.social avatar

@dav1d I would probably say there are multiple (potentially) infinite sets of programming languages:

  • Generally known programming languages that are currently in use

  • Generally known programming languages that are not currently in use

  • Generally unknown programming languages (example: a programming language that was created by one person as a hobby, a project, or a thesis) that are currently in use

  • Generally unknown programming languages that are not currently in use

  • Unknown programming languages that were created but never documented in public (example: known to one person because it was a custom variant for a machine that was special one-off)

  • Unknown programming languages that were created and documented, but lost in an archive
