@tristansnell Why do "we" care about the abuse of dogs but not the systemic slaughter of millions of cows, pigs, chickens, and fish every day? Why does no one go to prison for that?
@bleakfuture@tristansnell I'm not a vegan by the way. I just think this is a reasonable ethical argument under certain ethical frameworks that deserves serious scrutiny.
Humans have a seriously impressive ability for cognitive dissonance and in a vacuum there is no moral or ethical argument in support of slaughtering animals. But there are 3 fundamental truths:
This isn’t a vacuum
Humans aren’t moral
Humans aren’t ethical
We can at once know that killing pigs is rude but also enjoy bacon without connecting those dots. It’s one of the many, many obvious alarm bells that we’re nowhere near as smart as we think we are.
@bleakfuture@tristansnell That all tracks with me. But I think it comes into play when we try to scold others for ethics- we're all potentially ethically compromised ourselves.
@escarpment@tristansnell of course we have - but as a society we’ve deemed dogs friends and cows food. Some cows can be friends and some dogs can be food but not often for either.
There is no rhyme or reason for it - I’m sure dog is delicious and I don’t love the idea of cows being executed, but here we are.
The more interesting thing is the Noem puppy story will outrage more people than humans killing humans will.
