As this rather important part is missing from the article, "The thorium crystal trick" also involves (from the paper):

"Placing the atoms in a solid-state crystal lattice confines them to a region that is much smaller than the excitation wavelength (Lamb–Dicke regime), which suppresses the effects of photon recoil and first-order Doppler shift on the nuclear transition".
