@evilcookies98 okay so there's this actual play show of dungeons and dragons called "a crown of candy" (apologies if you're already familiar with it)
in it, all the characters are anthropomorphic food people. belizabeth is a broccoli, and some peope ship her with citrina, a lemon. the joke is if they do oral, does citrina taste like an actual lemon lmao. it was funny to me because I was thinking of how people's faces screw up after eating sour lemons.
@evilcookies98 the first episode is free on youtube if youre interested! unfortunately the rest are behind a paywall. but they do have other full seasons of TTRPG shows for free, like Fantasy High. the premise for that one is basically "what if dungeons and dragons was a john hughes movie?"
@kalayo that is kind of awesome. I’ve wanted to get into games like that, but I don’t know how I would manage it. I don’t even know enough to know where to get started.
@evilcookies98 I didn't know about TTRPGs until watching fantasy high either actually, then I got really into it and got my friends to play it a lot with me. I've even played with strangers online, both in voice calls and text-based. now I don't really have the time, but it's still really fun to get into. I love watching the play shows by dropout (the people making fantasy high, a crown of candy, etc) because the cast are all professional comedians, so they're funny, and they value tight storytelling rather than just letting the game drag on forever...
but anyway I'm rambling haha. if you ever check it out, I hope it entertains you as well!
@kalayo the main thing I’m worried about is the amount of actual paper I would have to deal with. This is a problem because I have zero vision and wouldn’t be able to read my own papers.
@evilcookies98 I can't speak to exactly how these games are played with zero vision, but I can say that TTRPGs can be very customizable. There are rules systems that don't require papers or dice or anything physical at all. Some can even be played solo.
The gist of it is just "Person A narrates one thing", "Person B narrates a response", and if required, dice is rolled or a card is pulled or some other random number generator is used to help decide the outcome. As for reading your own papers, a lot of the time it doesn't matter if you have your co-players keeping track of things for you or reading things out for you. All you really have to do is make narrative decisions. It's less about beating the other players with your special abilities, and more about working with them to tell a satisfying story within the rules of the game.
Still, don't have enough experience with this to know for sure if playing the dungeons and dragons specifically is accessible... I think what matters the most is you're playing with a group you can trust. (Also, the play shows I mentioned are also available as podcasts if that's more preferable!)
