LB: That dissection kinda reminds me why I love classic click wheel iPods so much, and why it's so odd that Apple of all companies should produce such a weirdly tone deaf promo.
Scrolling through your music on an iPod is a joy. The mechanical act of spinning a wheel to roll through, a physical connection to your tunes. Humans crave physical interaction with the tools we use. So while it's useful that an iPad can do all those things, the act of creating that way is kinda hollow.
My last iPad supported the first gen Pencil, so I've used it as a writing tablet, and there's something just not right about it.
I think it's that the feedback just isn't there. You're moving a slightly grippy nib over a perfectly smooth sheet of glass in a way that doesn't feel like writing on paper at all. The end result is a slightly unsatisfying experience.
It's like drinking sugar free fizzy pop. It's kinda the same, but not. It's unsatisfying.
Over the past few years I've begun to shrink further and further away from doing everything on one device, to having separate things that are better. I read on a Kobo because the screen is designed purely for that purpose. I listen to music on an iPod. For my radio show I use my clunky, chunky Numark DJ controller instead of simply making do with software faders on an iPad screen.
I do this because I like the physical sensation of using these tools. An iPad can't provide that sensation.
