Ok so I posted and then deleted a reply about how this is very common sense and it's weird that people in the States have to do all of that judicial process to change your name when in Argentina and the UK you don't.
But after doing some googling it seems I was wrong, Argentina HAS a US style draconic name change process, but not if you're trans?????
Like, you have to give a reason and a judge has to authorize it unless you're transgender or a victim of the 1976-1983 dictatorship, and no other reason. Which for my purposes is cool but is genuinely so weird.
@AppleAmps@elsie it’s not even just the USA, this is a thing across pretty much every European state, except for the UK. I imagine it’s actually common across the rest of the world, for some reason. I don’t get it. Your name is a personal thing. You can change your address and other personal details quickly, but not your name????
@yassie_j@AppleAmps@elsie i don't get why so much of your personal life is directly tied towards a name that you never get to choose and that is super difficult to change :neocat_flop:
in places with self-id laws, trans people have an advantage here while almost all cis people are just stuck with the name their parents assigned them (except for marriage obviously). theoretically, once the german self-id law goes into action (less than 6 months from now) i can change my name once a year :neocat_3c: (and if the nazi party's words are anything to go by, use it to escape law enforcement by changing my identity :neocat_aww: but knowing them thats just made up nonsense)
@yassie_j@AppleAmps@elsie i believe they did remove the clause where name changes are forwarded to law enforcement though so be gay do crime could be real??
@lea@elsie@AppleAmps one of my colleagues at work was called Paul all his life, and then one day he came into work and his name became Tristan. He just… Decided… To do that. He’s been Tristan ever since. Since he decided that was his name, our employer, his bank, the government, etc had to update their records to reflect his new name.
@yassie_j@AppleAmps@elsie don't you need like 2 witnesses and a decent chunk of paperwork for a deed poll here? not sure how much exactly cause my parents were the ones who did it but it definitely remembers the need for people willing to be witnesses or whatever
@maddie@elsie@AppleAmps you only need a witness and a scrap of paper that says “I rescind my old name and choose this new name, I have witnesses that witnessed this”
It can be written on ketchup on a napkin and it would still be legally binding on everyone else
If you want to go the extra mile, you can have this entered into the Royal Courts of Justice as an official notice, but that costs money and this way is free
