This is the #eruption map as of yesterday evening, with an assessed area of 3,7km² (the first eruption, at #Fagradalsfjall, only did about 5km² in nearly half a year of erupting). Reports are that the northern vents are stronger, which we can all hope for, given the greater distance to infrastructure.
The 4,5km fissure has now condensed down to 300-500m (as described previously, this is part of their normal development, eventually centering on a single, lower-volume crater). This is happening at around the centre of the fissure.
Stuff’s getting real #Iceland. 1400 #earthquakes, some fairly strong, in the #grindavik area in the last 48 hours. They evacuated the #BlueLagoon a couple of days ago, and today they announced an evacuation of Grindavik because they just don’t know exactly where the #magma will emerge. But it’s looking to be several times stronger than the #ReykjanesPeninsula eruptions of the last 3 summers.
There has been a lot of earthquakes there in the last few days and now there is concern about a potential volcanic eruption close to or even inside the town.
Close by #BlueLagoon has already been closed as well.
A member of the @Vivaldi team living in Grindavík evacuated earlier today with his family.
