Are there local geology lecture series that are open to the public, especially any that cover recent discoveries/papers/topics/etc? When I lived in Boston, a geological observatory held monthly lectures on weeknights.

PNSN would be perfect, but they don’t seem to do that. UW ESS has a cool-looking colloquium series but it’s during the workday. And Nick Zentner’s way out in Ellensburg. I’d just love to meet other geology geeks!

@seachanger I've been browsing Xitter on occasion to see how specific news is being reported there or to catch up on a handful of accounts, but wow has it fallen completely apart on the whole. I wish Mastodon were more active, but I'm glad for this pretty positive experience to date. :)

These crews need some kind of Civilian Medal of Valor, on-the-spot insta-retirement, SOMETHING. They are literally walking up to the edge of a lava flow from a brand-new fissure eruption to move equipment out of the way.

Just because effusive eruptions seem predictable, that doesn't mean they always (or ever) are. They are risking their lives to do this.

@FlockOfCats Just know which one not to sit in. It was a door hidden so as to look/act as a window, which is why the hole was so big (and door-shaped). It’s there on all 737s, I think. But only some airlines opt to use them as an extra set of emergency exit doors.

I’m so glad the FAA’s grounding the whole 737 MAX 9 fleet. They seriously need to ground every MAX plane, considering all the issues they’ve had and all the corners Boeing is STILL trying to cut.

According to geology professor Shawn Willsey, in Grindavik today, they detected SO2 - a volcanic gas.

It doesn’t mean the eruption’s imminent, especially since the most violent of the magma intrusive processes (e.g., the earthquakes and ground cracks) along the dike have subsided, so it’s not pushing upward so forcefully. But at this point, it is believed that the magma’s maybe 1/2-mile beneath the surface.

Stuff’s getting real . 1400 , some fairly strong, in the area in the last 48 hours. They evacuated the a couple of days ago, and today they announced an evacuation of Grindavik because they just don’t know exactly where the will emerge. But it’s looking to be several times stronger than the eruptions of the last 3 summers.
