A long serving plate with all kinds of seafood and some veggies, all baked with a topping of salted bread crumbs
A walkway through the village ends at a large rock wall of natural stone formation at the edge of the sea. A cave-like portal has worn through the base of the stone, big enough to stoop through, but there is a fence and a warning sign. Houses and stone foundations have been built atop this rock formation, forming a colorful bridge of buildings.
A hill rises steeply at the edge of the village. It has many terraces, fences, and retaining walls, and each terrace grows grapes or lemons.

Vacation in 9/n This was the first of many anchovy dishes I ate while visiting Monterosso del Mare. They are really big on anchovies, in every restaurant and souvenir shop.

Vacation in 4/n

A wider view shows that terraced slope sits behind and above a village perched atop giant rock abutments at the edge of the sea. There’s a harbor inlet, with buildings up above each side, and a large stone bridge connecting the two sides.
Another view of one of those little villages, tightly capping a huge rock base, sort of like a filling on a tooth. Richly green mountains rise behind and all around.
At the crest of the high rolling hills there is another little village tucked among the trees. At a natural vee in the peaks, separate from the village, a large church stands alone.

🇮🇹🚂🚃🚃 The stretch alongside 's coastline towards 🇮🇹 is simply marvellous 🤩... especially when served together with a nice breakfast at a double sleeper🛌 compartment of 's🇦🇹 -service №233! The two portions from 🇩🇪 & 🇦🇹 arrived without delay 😍👍!

There are rather direct routes via Milan and Rome, I could have been over in just 9 hours (impressive !).

But I wanted to take a detour via the Express train, and to stay over the weekend in . All by train.

Arriving in Tirano at 12:49 and leaving at 13:08 is enough to change station (100 m appart) and get confortable on board the regional train to .

Nice scenes as we pass by (but no photos worth showing 😅).

Then uneventful journey from Milano to via (same train).

Depending on where you stop, you might have to change to a regional train in (the northernmost of the 5 villages) or you'll end-up in (true story, don't ask 🫣).

22 years ago today I took this shot of in the in . It's special to me because it was the first photo I took where everything really seemed to click -- I liked it, other people liked it, and I think I've been chasing that feeling ever since. Thanks also to my friend @Syncros who always encouraged me in those early days.

The beautiful seascape of the Cinque Terre is a delight at any time but perhaps more challenging in August as the crowd arrives. My sister and I (part of that crowd) hiked across the hills that run behind the five towns. You can see the dozens of people splashing in the rock pools below the restaurants.
