The crows continue to gain on us.

' The researchers say that the birds' counting skills are like those of human toddlers, who often count based upon vocalizations of numbers rather than using numbers themselves. '

@military @ethics 🧵

I am starting a thread on killing at warfare:

eric,

"War deaths from malnutrition and a damaged health system and environment likely far outnumber deaths from combat."

"An estimated 3.6-3.8 million people have died indirectly in US war zones since 2001, bringing the total death toll to at least 4.5-4.7 million and counting."

at Brown University: https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/costs/human/civilians

During 1990–2017, #wars contributed about 29 million civilian #deaths on the planet, not #counting killing: https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-020-01708-5

---The Arithmetic of Tears---

One person crying is a solitude
Two people crying are a divorce
Three people crying are a birth.

Four people crying are a reunion
Five people crying are funeral
Six people crying are a wedding.

Seven people crying are a wedding and one broken heart
Eight people crying are a chorus line
Nine people crying are a winning baseball team.

Ten people crying are the universal flood.

Tweaked for Visuals

For this combinational prompt, I will be taking my submission for Quadratic: Rect ^ 2 and merging it with a new coded entry for Counting. The counting occurs through different iterations of assessing the time variable

Overlaid sketches that were coded in LiveCodeLab

Poem

Rectangles roaming
Rotating & rolling
Running & rimming along
Reciting the rhymes that belong
Twirling and twisting
Avoiding the mistakes that were tripping
As the angles of the others are tilting
Tiling and tipping
Tipping to the ways as the rectangles are roaming

Number #two has a very interesting #etymology: Despite the differences between two, #dva #doi and #zwei, they come from the same Proto-Indo-European root: dwóh₁.

@robinlovelace Robin, I think you should point out that GeoPandas can stream in features from a zip file on the web without downloading. This is not a feature specific to R. See for example https://fio-planet.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/simplification/#counting-vertices-in-a-feature-collection. GeoPandas uses the fiona package and its dataset naming convention.

WHY WOULD ANY DECIMAL COUNTING SYSTEM IN ANY LANGUAGE PUT THE TENS LAST?

For context: #Yiddish (like many central European languages) phrases numbers with the "tens" value last.

So, instead of "Three-hundred eighty-five" it is phrases "Three-hundred five and eighty"

This breaks my brain.
