The Red Cross asks people who live in #Grindavík and are evacuating the town now to contact 1717 in order to be registered.

You can stop by the main office of the Red Cross at Efstaleiti 9 and register there if that is more convenient.

Per the Guardian, the erupting volcano,
"Ibu is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupting more than 21,000 times last year. "

Doesn't that translate to it erupted all year long? How are we defining an eruption if we can count multiple eruptions a day?

Clarification for this will be most appreciated.

Good morning, friends ☕ ☕ 🐕 🐕 💞 💞

Thanks to @ingalls for the reminder that May 18 is the anniversary of the Mt St Helens eruption (1980), and it's worth marking that day.

We had moved from Yakima to Wenatchee a few years earlier, so got the reports of 'darkness at noon' by phone from my grandma who was still there.

This ⬇️ is a US Forest Service photo, taken at 1:30PM on Yakima Avenue, Yakima WA, on May 18 as the ash cloud passed through.

Hörður Kristleifsson posted another of his 360 degree aerial panoramas of the eruption site in Iceland. This one was taken right after the eruption officially ended and you can seen down into the splatter cone, now devoid of lava.

Very cool and neat tool for getting an idea of the ground coverage this cycle of eruption produced.

Everyone is waiting to see what happens next.

The Icelandic Met has issued a new bulletin about magma buildup in the Svartsengi area. Their current estimate of magma buildup based on surface deformation/land rise is 14 million cubic meters, which is equal or greater to the amounts which previously triggered eruptions in the area. They're advising that another eruption may be imminent and with very little warning, as the ground is already heavily fractured.

When Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai erupted in January 2022, the underwater volcano in the South Pacific unleashed the most intense lightning storm ever recorded and set off a mega-tsunami that was hundreds of feet high. Research indicated the eruption was fueled by two merging magma chambers. Now, scientists are looking at another potential trigger. Live Science has more: https://flip.it/ZAjd2N

A flyover of the eruption at Sundhnúkagígaröðin shows no lava in the crater (though it could still be flowing in lava tubes):

With uplift continuing even before flow cessation, it seems only a matter of time before there's another large outburst at a random location.

In Iceland, they're in the process of building a second set of magma defense berms on Grindavik's eastern flanks. The primary berm system has been overflowed twice in recent weeks and lava piled up behind the existing berms is taller than the berms now across much of their length.

The new berms will be 6 meters high and offset from the original ones by about 120 meters.

The problem as I see it is there isn't really a way for this new berm system to rechannel/divert lava which spills over elsewhere. It's more forming a "catchment basin" with with a fixed dimension and volume. When it's full, it's full.

Right now, it's what they can do. Mother nature doesn't argue, she simply does what she does. Will she keep spewing out lava in this location for years?

Looks like we're starting to see a lot of small but very shallow tremors in the vicinity of Svartsengi. Svartsengi has continued to see significant land uplift even with the outflow of magma in the area, indicating significant and rising magma levels below the surface. How much longer until the area sees another significant eruption?

Looks like none of the usual webcams are focused on the new berm construction, but one of the time-lapse cameras does appear to be catching it:

Un tableau qui résume l'augmentation du volume de lave de ces derniers mois, ayant engendré la création d'une digue (symbole carré) ou d'une éruption (symbole étoile). Et là, on doit frôler les 10 millions de mètre cube donc oui, c'est imminent !
