that @JasonPunyon curated and compiled a whopping archive of answers from and assorted Q&A sites in a minimal sqlite format, where they can be downloaded and analyzed offline:

Amazing effort and great idea. Reminded me of the archives that kept of it (alongside Wikipedia and similar projects), but more streamlined and cross-platform. Nice.

Also, for who's wondering about the part:

https://wiki.kiwix.org/wiki/Content_in_all_languages

Arch, Gentoo Wikis, Wikipedia in several languages and levels of detail (pic, no pic, summaries only, etc) and SO, all in the ZIM format.

So yesterday we saw a play featuring a guy in prison and it involved the question of knowledge and reading. Somehow I felt envy of this situation of having time (and no other option) to read an learn stuff.

Maybe this influenced me into installing @kiwix on my MiniPC and using ~ 400 GB on my large backup disk to get some zim files.

Wikipedia , Arch Wiki and all I need to survive in case of a temporary end of the world. I mean someone cutting the fiber cable on the tree.

@kiwix If anyone is interested this is the script to start kiwi-serve with all .zim files in a folder.

📢 I had the pleasure of working with the @kiwix team on a case study titled "How the PWA allows users to store Gigabytes of data from the Internet for offline use": https://web.dev/case-studies/kiwix. Happy reading! Spoiler: they use the origin private file system, a API 🐡.

I really like the idea behind Kiwix or internet-in-a-box.

Found this nice docker container to create your own zim files from websites you like.

https://github.com/openzim/zimit

Wondering what people think about Kiwix and their ability to create web archives. I see their primary goal is to make website accessible offline. But would you consider a zim file good place to conserve a website mid- to long-term?

Which websites would you store to look up information during a period of no internet access? (Besides the ones is offering in their library.)

Exciting to see how @kiwix, and are used to bring content (and more!) to villages where internet access isn't an option.

Great reminder! I’ve seen the power of to bring the online world to places that are either offline or barely connected. As noted, it’s also a great way to have resilient access to information like in the event of network outages.

Unfortunately we had a small outage this weekend, but this is a good opportunity to remind everyone that you can download entire copies of and other freely licensed projects for use via !

Check out @kiwix - https://www.kiwix.org and set it up on your smartphone or laptop or boat so you can access free knowledge wherever you go.

Here in , our internet sometimes drops for hours, sometimes a day or two. For fun, I setup offline internet content server using and old laptop and WiFi router. Now we have our own private that never goes down (except when the power is out, which is another toot).
We have and lots of other useful content, all available without an internet connection. To learn more, follow the Kiwix Project.

@lhamilton1515 @kiwix I spent a week downloading content. There's more there than I'll ever consume. Having my own server has shown me how practical it is, especially for those who really struggle with connectivity. For me its a fun project to show off, but I can see what a lifeline it could be for others.
