#TIL that @JasonPunyon curated and compiled a whopping archive of answers from #StackOverflow and assorted #StackExchange Q&A sites in a minimal sqlite format, where they can be downloaded and analyzed offline:
Amazing effort and great idea. Reminded me of the archives that #Kiwix kept of it (alongside Wikipedia and similar projects), but more streamlined and cross-platform. Nice.
So yesterday we saw a play featuring a guy in prison and it involved the question of knowledge and reading. Somehow I felt envy of this situation of having time (and no other option) to read an learn stuff.
Maybe this influenced me into installing @kiwix on my MiniPC and using ~ 400 GB on my large backup disk to get some zim files.
Wikipedia , Arch Wiki and all I need to survive in case of a temporary end of the world. I mean someone cutting the fiber cable on the tree.
📢 I had the pleasure of working with the @kiwix team on a case study titled "How the #Kiwix PWA allows users to store Gigabytes of data from the Internet for offline use": https://web.dev/case-studies/kiwix. Happy reading! Spoiler: they use the origin private file system, a #ProjectFugu API 🐡.
Wondering what people think about Kiwix and their ability to create web archives. I see their primary goal is to make website accessible offline. But would you consider a zim file good place to conserve a website mid- to long-term?
We have a FreedomBox app for @kiwix now. Coming to a FreedomBox near you! (in a few days)
Thanks to @legoktm for maintaining the kiwix-tools package in @debian
Big thanks to the community deployment teams in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for motivating me to add this app to FreedomBox. You are the real heroes distributing our work to the masses and spreading the word about #Kiwix, #Debian and #FreedomBox. 👏
And, thanks to our friends from Kerala for organizing #DebConf23 ❤️
Exciting to see how @kiwix, #FreedomBox and #Debian are used to bring #Wikipedia content (and more!) to villages where internet access isn't an option.
Great reminder! I’ve seen the power of #Kiwix to bring the online world to places that are either offline or barely connected. As noted, it’s also a great way to have resilient access to information like #Wikipedia in the event of network outages.
Unfortunately we had a small outage this weekend, but this is a good opportunity to remind everyone that you can download entire copies of #Wikipedia and other freely licensed projects for #offline use via #Kiwix!
Check out @kiwix - https://www.kiwix.org and set it up on your smartphone or laptop or boat so you can access free knowledge wherever you go.

Here in #rural#Minnesota, our internet sometimes drops for hours, sometimes a day or two. For fun, I setup #Kiwix offline internet content server using and old laptop and WiFi router. Now we have our own private #internet that never goes down (except when the power is out, which is another toot).
We have #Wikipedia and lots of other useful content, all available #offline without an internet connection. To learn more, follow the Kiwix Project.
@lhamilton1515@kiwix I spent a week downloading content. There's more there than I'll ever consume. Having my own #Kiwix server has shown me how practical it is, especially for those who really struggle with connectivity. For me its a fun project to show off, but I can see what a lifeline it could be for others.
