I've seen a bit of discussion lately about Mastodon's AUTHORIZED_FETCH and DISALLOW_UNAUTHENTICATED_API_ACCESS settings and since I had a hard enough time myself figuring out what they do based on the documentation and Discord comments, I wrote up what I hope is a more approachable explanation.
Admins: I have now asked 6 admins what their Mastodon instances cost to run. They vary widely, but the average instance cost seems to run roughly $500 per 10,000 registered users, per month (not MAUs). Is this consistent with your admin experience? If not, is yours significantly more or less $?
Okay, anyone be able to shed some like on what these stats mean on our instance #Sidekiq? I mean I get what processed is. But what is failed, busy, retries, scheduled, and dead? Are those figures the number of posts going out from our insurance or into? Or both?
It seems there's even some delay on my powerful instance, but only for some minutes or so. I'm deducing this based on the notification flood. Or then the issues are all round, not sure which way. Even #MastodonSocial struggling? #Eurovision causes quite a heavy server load. #MastoAdmin#Servers#Instances#MastodonInstance#SysAdmin
Are you new to #Mastodon? Are you a lover of #Tech? Are you looking for a permanent server to call home that you can feel comfortable sharing what you love and enjoy with people you can get along with?
