Read through this paper last night https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.04494
TLDR Deepmind repurposed a standard LLM to accept a singular tokenized gameboard (not game sequence) and produce an action-value function (probability of winning off of the move == score) out of the transformers in it. With no additional game search they achieved grandmaster equivalence; with two caveats.

This is brought to you by our Reinforcement Learning homework in which we were asked to implement the SAC algorithm. Something tells me this was not the ideal choice for literally the first Reinforcement Learning assignment given to students. 🫠

"Algorithm instance Footprint: Separating Easily Solvable and Challenging Problem Instances".

Looks like a benchmark for figure out what types of problems are hard to be solved by a set of benchmarked algorithms.

Clustering of algorithms in the performance on the problems, with problems being dimensions in high-dim.

Switch of gears - time of "Complex Systems and Impact track".

First paper, "MAP-Elites with Descriptor-Conditioned Gradients and Archive Distillation into a Single Policy".

Looks like a n x project to improve behavior learning.

AlphaStar in the introduction; screenshot of a Gumiho game. <rant>I disagree - Lowko's ladder cheese against AlphaStar would have been much more appropriate and representative </rant>.

Next was a great talk by Anne Collins on bridging , , and computation in at the Learning Salon. After some bombastic claims that "RL is all you need" to explain cognition, Collins and the broader group dissect what's missing from this picture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLbZh-bH8V0 (3/9)

Quiet day, more BL – and a drabble

This morning, I walked into the city centre to run a couple of errands - I'll try and get outside for at least a while every day, even if I have to take it easy.

Back home (after a break to recuperate), I was finally able to hang the curtains I bought to keep the cold drafts away from my back - the drawback of living in in a

Afternoon in the spa & recs

This afternoon I went to a spa in a nearby town - they've got saline waters and an awesome sauna area, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

Usually, I go to the sauna regularly in winter, feeling that it helps my crappy immune system in addition to simply being wonderfully relaxing and therefore combating the winter blues. This winter

New year, more privacy

Over the course of the past couple of months I've become more aware of the privacy issues of the modern internet. I'm not paranoid, but I'm also not a fan of big corporations tracking me and trying to sell me stuff.

Back in the day, I left Hotmail and signed up for Gmail, when it had a 1 GB storage limit that far exceeded most other services as well as probably the best spam filt

A somewhat productive Sunday

Although this blog is far from finished, I'm rather happy with everything I've accomplished today. I've also continued my writing streak, managing another 800 words on my Jalec Vampire Academy AU.

Also planned our annual North Sea vacation in the Netherlands with one of my best friends - if possible, we'll go back to the beach hut we were at last September.
