"I'm pretty sure pigs can fly." says every person who has heard it's true a thousand times but hasn't really evaluated the claim in detail or tested it. 😞 FairVote has so much money to spread "your vote is always counted" misinformation about #RankChoice (and lies about #STARvoting), that nobody tries to see through the second or third round of IRV/RCV/STV that is just a shell-game stall tactic to prevent #VotingReform https://starvoting.org

    @aliza @AnhedonicHedonist @marcelias "instant runoff" is a shell game of a vote counting method, that won't fix splitting or deliver many of the results promised by its lobbyists, because it doesn't count everyone's votes equally + simultaneously. Just look at wasted votes in any 3 candidate election like NYC. As voting reforms go, IRV is a waste of time when actually good methods exist: STAR or Approval voting (ideally with top-two runoff like St Louis.)

    Would your candidate have won the last election if you had been using voting? 🤷 Why would the same candidates have been the only ones running? IRV would mostly mitigate the spoiler effect as long as the spoiler had no real chance of winning, but you wouldn't have had a 3-candidate election if you had IRV and instead you would get different and more confusing vote-splitting. Get yourselves a voting method that's not just fabricated consent at https://starvoting.org

    If you get lost in the "math" of voting, only requires addition, and then we count favorites between the top two, for those who would like to have a instead of choosing between democrats and voter suppression. Single-winner STV is not a fix for polarization or a way out of the status-quo, IRV is just a shell-game distraction and understanding the dynamics or strategy of STV is just a train wreck compared to understanding proportional STAR quotas & fractions.

    @whitemice @danwentzel despite the "fiercely independent" mythos, most Americans are either too afraid or simply not equipped to think for themselves. For example, many believe that a choose-only-one/two-party system is democracy. Some have been duped by voting, 30% don't vote don't think it matters. starvoting.org is a big lift bcs simple math but parkingreform.org is low-hanging fruit, even the most tuned-out Americans can tell that requirements in zoning code is 💸💸💸

    I remember the 2000 Election. There were enough votes for Ralph Nader to hand the election to George W. Bush.

    I remember the 2016 Election. There were enough votes for Jill Stein to hand the election to Donald Trump.

    In 2024 the Green Party is running Cornell West. Let’s not repeat this history, friends

    Your vote is not a marriage. You’re not choosing a life partner. It’s a chess move for what’s best for the country and the world.

    @dkmcf @oblomov the Instant-Runoff counting method, that's been branded as , has problems beyond just not letting you rank all of the candidates or not allowing them to be ranked equally. It eliminates a universally-second-choice candidate in the first round, and basically just repeats our problematic plurality-first vote-counting method, that is causing the problems IRV advocates claim it would solve, by doing multiple rounds. Score+runoff https://starvoting.org actually delivers

    @georgetakei When will Democrats tire of being the "lesser evil" and get on the ball with real voting reform https://starvoting.org that would let people vote for third parties EVEN TO THE POINT OF ELECTING THEM, unlike the distraction which only works to shed a spoiler who couldn't win, is excessively complicated, yet the darling of the Establishment (who could just put it forward anytime but doesn't act until they need to block or grassroots groups.)

    In 2025 we need to restore trust in New York City government. That means we all need to be thinking about who we're going to support to make Eric Adams a one-term mayor.

    RT @johnsurico It's astonishing how much McGuinness Blvd, where the mayor backtracked on a street redesign after a donor/biz outcry, has had a chilling effect on convos w/organizers. I keep hearing 'what happened on McGuinness;' it's become almost synonymous with influence outweighing merit.

    @enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

    @capntransit and definitely get your ducks in a row to agree on a winner before the election or get it replaced with something actually good like instead of just wishing it was safe to vote for your favorite first.

    #STARVoting is canvassing at PSU Farmers Market Sat July 29. Volunteers and signatures needed to get https://www.starvoting.org/star4or2024 on the Oregon 2024 ballot. This is the #VotingReform we need to break out of two-party games like "throwing your vote away" with simplistic outdated vote-counting methods, better than #RankChoice because in STAR, your vote always counts and the 2-step results (add & count your favorite of top-2) are simple to distribute, track, & audit. #ORpol #Portland #pdx

    Too bad the commission went with their feelings about how works, rather than listening to their voting methods research committee, who had done the homework and recommended . Now we've got the business association's pet conservative electeds proposing to make 3 proportional seats per district into 2 single-winner elections, where RCV/IRV will deliver status quo results and money-talks manufactured consent, like it has for 100 years.🙄

    #ORleg been talking about #RankChoice for two decades (IRV is "proven for 100 years" unable to get us out of the 2-party rut) but now that #STARvoting is gathering signatures on the ground, the forces of status-quo preservation suddenly see some need for urgency 🙄 yay for all the people with their hearts in the right place and not being able to work through the math for two seconds about how votes actually get counted

    Adopting voting because you wanted better elections is like buying a car because you want convenient and reliable mobility at rush hour. It seems like it will do what you want but the math just doesn't work like that. is the you actually wanted and we already have the infrastructure.
