#devRant has vanished from app stores. Now I wonder how new people will ever make it to the community of funny and loud nerds like this one. The way I discovered it is by searching #DevHumor in Google Images and clicking on the one joke I liked. Despite being website second and mobile first, devRant has found its way to my desktop bookmarks, I quickly became a user just to throw a few snarky jokes back and take part in some interesting discussions. There are lots of #TIL moments to have, too.
Few telling signs show that dR does not feel well: subscriptions stopped functioning and now app is nowhere to be found on Play Store. There are simply periods when servers refuse to accept some LTE connections, which is strange for mobile first platform. Now users will have to resort to third-party app, like #skyRant, to access the platform at finger tips.
This situation got me musing again about an app that could interact with devRant and Fediverse, optionally archiving stuff on the latter.
There is something to be said about moderation, for sure. First of all, if you think that all of the Mastodon is the safe harbor and the bubble, I will need to pop yours. Never doubt that Fediverse can be unhinged, especially with slacking administrators and orphan instances.
If you can't host your server or care about moderating it, simply find one that you can trust. It takes time listing through options and even reading between the lines, but main part for me was that server doesn't disappear on me one day and take my posts away. I chose #TechHub because of its transparent description of costs and donations and, most importantly, iron clad rules that administration was, is and will be known to enforce! Second reason being fun stuff and people I discovered in the local feed (it may be cluttered nowadays).
Then, having account and all, how do you make yourself at home? Where are my rants and lulz?
Hey #TechHub users, I've finally updated the finance page on the Hub.
We are doing great financially, thanks to everyone who is donating.
The monthly #donations currently exceed our monthly expenses, but our yearly expenses have grown a lot due to the fees/maintenance of running the business.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to DM me.
Cheers,
I've truly enjoyed my first year, and ready for my second.
Thank you to @Gargron and the team at #Mastodon, the awesome #TechHub server owner/admin @nicdex , the @MonaApp Developer, and “most especially” the kind and gracious people who follow me. It's more appreciated than you know…
@alabut@nicdex Thanks! And it’s crazy that 3 days before I joined, @nicdex only had about 100 accounts. Couple days later, it was over 5k. Now #Techhub is close to 79k accounts. Total props; he and all the other server admins are the unsung heroes keeping this platform alive.
Looks like the s3 bucket switch/transfer went smooth. Some files are still transferring, but all should be done by the end of the maintenance window. #techhub#maintenance#allgood
This is one of the most horrible UI changes I've seen in a long time. It doesn't fit, it is just a misplaced image in the middle of nowhere and honestly an eye sore. I hate it so much that I am working on a way to delete it from the #HTML received from https://techhub.social/
I guess it tells you more about “FOSS”todon than anything else that they chose to block a human rights activist/privacy advocate who wakes up and works at a not-for-profit on free and open software every day. Maybe if I were to work at Google and hack on a hobby open source project in the evenings I’d be acceptable?
Hello #techhub, this morning issue is resolved now 💪 .
#transparency about the issue -
the service had a lot of back-end jobs to process due to removing the spam accounts we suspended a month ago. Mix in the default logging configuration 🤦, it was enough to fill up the disk hosting the /var/log folder. Like 80+GB of logs in 24h. Anyhow I am learning from this and reviewed the logging configurations for all servers. 😎
I hope you are having a great week-end so far. Have a nice day 😀.
