COMMENTARY CLUB - Minisode 060 - Top of the Pops 80s Showdown

We thought we'd revisit a Top of the Pops from 1988 the week Big was released... and it didn't go so good. So we also had a look at an earlier episode from 1985 to the right the balance!

A belated birthday gift and proof if anyone needed it that I wasn’t the only awesome thing to come out of 1983.

Watching a repeat remembered my mind to the colossal bag of shit of a called Glam Metal Detectives

It ran for one series in the 90s. It was ... shit.

The first episode is here https://yewtu.be/watch?v=39XqrH0w73I&list=PL00PZ_WBiUoZ05V_peZBB3YAVElZVNNY8&index=0

But looking back there were some well known people in it.

Gray Beadle who was Paul in EastEnders was in it! ... I always like the way Paul acted. He was too good for EastEnders.

I was watching an old episode of and there were these two Dutch dudes doing a over the music of Madonna's Holiday.

They were called DJ Mike Wiffwaff and Sven or something. And it was so fucking lousy.

I've always loathed the casual kind of rap, like, Hey! Rap's really easy! sort of thing. I mean, it really displays its cultural appropriation. It's just an embarrassment.

The British music show ; throughout its peak years you could wander through your towns whilst it was being broadcast and there would not be another soul out there, they were like ghost towns. The attraction of with all generations was quite literally mind blowing and I doubt it will ever be repeated.

Yikes, the last time I saw Bad Manners on one of these episodes I was sick and then I tested positive for Covid the next day... (Memories!)

@flexghost

stole THE WIN from The Pogues' song, Fairytale in New York, 1987

They LOST on hit of the year, but came in ⭕2nd.

Hey, ⭕2nd is good too, but in this case, the Pet Boys got a big boost on the NY radio stations and it wasn't until a few years later that I finally saw the great video, see below

The 2005 documentary https://youtu.be/TUSNzqqLFT0 explains the making of the song
The woman Kristie MacColl was the key, added at the last min

I really love "Searching" by China Black at no. 5. Did you buy this record, Mastodon?
(Hmm, I didn't, but let's say that I bought it in spirit) 😉

Love CeCe Peniston!
Enjoyed the Level 42 song (pleased they were still getting hits in '94) (Radio One was playlisting them?)
Status Quo - 100 appearances on The Pops [/Peter Powell]?! That is a LOT!
