@u0421793@functional.cafe

I’m an artist/designer
Don’t talk to me about technical shit I’m not interested

I’m working on a special project of my own, wish me luck, currently making a dummy in order to get some investment & backing soon – spoiler: basically returning to the kind of work I made a living 80s/90s

I tried programming once in the 80s (FORTH, green screen 80 chars), it didn’t actually work, got the sack for wasting time instead of my real job (industrial photography then)

This year I released an album in Dobly Atmos surround spatial: u0421793 / No Laments for Pale Sunsets
Apple Music, in Atmos spatial (with lyrics):
https://music.apple.com/gb/album/no-laments-for-pale-sunsets/1684857695
Also on other places eg Spotify YouTube etc as a binaural stereo mixdown – I’m not doing any promotion, it’d be impolite, I’m British, it’s not intended to make me rich and famous

My other clutter: video gear (ATEM mini, mini pro, Roland V-02HD mkII); old cameras (35mm, 120); folding bike; watercolours

Cars kill people slowly and sometimes quickly

(This is a new account, but I was originally on here back in about 2017ish, so quite an early fediverse adopter)

“I’m opting in to tootfinder” - supposed to make this account searchable?

My ip has changed again this morning

u0421793,
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

Fucking porkbun hasn’t realised my ip has changed, so nothing works again, and the useless cunts don’t have any app or api I can download that actually works that ensures this isn’t a problem

It is a problem – every fucking morning, and those bastards expect us to just log in every time and manually change the ip addresses, every fucking day

Useless cunts

u0421793,
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

I can’t remember how I manually changed the ip address on porkbun yesterday and the day before

u0421793,
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

Found it again and changed it again

It’s absolutely pathetic what they offer – they have a help page which mentions a link which turns out to be deprecated and looks too complicated to install anyway, then on the deprecated page it says they suggest something else instead, ddclient, but ddclient on the raspberry pi doesn’t mention porkbun as an option to select, so that’s useless, and ddclient doesn’t have a mac app at all

It has a ‘nix’ thing on the mac and a ‘homebrew’ thing on the mac but that involves installing yet another untrustworthy thing I don’t know anything about so won’t install, and which looking at the pages for them seems to be incomprehensible and just far too complicated for what should just fucking be a simple app I download and install and run, just like I do with no-ip - they have a simple ‘duc’ app and it works and everything’s free, so it can be done and that’s how it should be done, not this insanely complicated stupid way that those cunts over at porkbun seem to think is the way to do the job, it isn’t

Fucking useless cunts

@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

My ip address has changed again this morning so I won’t be able to be on my normal fediverse account – and if anyone wanted to look at my web site, you can’t, it’s unavailable now because porkbun have no usable way of me updating my ip unless I go there and I can’t get into their website because they’ve just emailed me a code to proceed but I don’t see any such email, so fuck it all, you’ll have to do without my stuff from now on

u0421793,
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

@u0421793 I think I’ve got it sorted out now

why the fuck hasn’t porkbun got an easy way to do this, useless cunts – even no-ip which is free has a mac app which just works and does what is necessary

Fuck this, I’ve only been with porkbun a few weeks, I’m tempted to just tell them to fuck off and take the domain elsewhere (except gandi, who are also cunts)

u0421793, to random
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

My domain name stopped working because my ip address changed (twice in the same day) and there’s no way to make it update automatically

Also my raspberry pi had to be restarted so my Iceshrimp can’t start up either

I don’t think the two are related, they just happen to occur at the same time

So I’m on here for a while, I haven’t got time to sort out the other shit

Warning: Rant
My husband and I are both left-handed.

There are approximately 708 million left-handers in the world.

Over 9% of people are left-handed.

Apparently these numbers do not meet the threshold for inclusion in product design.

My former Mr. Coffee coffeemaker had ambidextrous functionality. The flap over the water reservoir opened to the back, allowing someone to pour water easily from either side.

My new Mr. Coffee coffeemaker includes a design change. The flap over the water reservoir opens to the left, making it almost impossible for me pour water into it.

I just bought a new electric water kettle. The first time I filled it with water, I guessed at the fill limit because I saw no markings inside.

Then I read the instruction manual that referenced the maximum fill line. What? Turns out, I can only see the fill line markings if I fill the kettle while holding it in my right hand. 🤦‍♀️

If you are a product designer, you commit design malpractice if you fail to acknowledge the existence of left-handers.

End rant.

A black electric water kettle on a kitchen counter. The handle is oriented to the right and the pour spout is on the left. The lid is flipped up. On the inside, stamped into the stainless steel, two fill line markers are visible.

@shansterable as a designer I design everything to be as hard as possible for the right-handers to use

@shansterable microwave ovens - it’d be nice to be able to put something in the fucking oven without the fucking door being actually in the fucking way for the entire duration of putting a thing in the thing

Tiny Mastodon Tip to Verify Yourself :verified:🐘:

The checkmark icons on Mastodon are not official. They are simply custom instance icons people add to their name, like I have on mine, usually for fun :official_verified: :verifiedpurple: :verified_flashing: :blobcatverified:

But, there is a way to verify
yourself on Mastodon! And it’s completely free! :awesome:

It works by providing a proof of ownership of a website you control. This is especially important for organizations to show followers their account is official.

HOW TO ❓

  1. On desktop, go to Preferences > Public profile, then click on the “Verification” tab at the top ✔

  2. Click on “Copy” to copy the HTML code containing a link to your Mastodon profile.

  3. Go to the website page you control and paste the code somewhere in the HTML code of the page.

In the HTML code, you can keep the hyperlink on the “Mastodon” word as it is per default, or you can attach it to a social media icon for example :mastodon:

Alternatively, you can make this link invisible (like I did on mine) and simply place this code within your website's head:
<link href="FULL-LINK-TO-YOUR-MASTODON-ACCOUNT" rel="me"> :blobboo:

  1. Once your website is up and updated, copy the full link to the page where you pasted your Mastodon account link.

  2. Back to your Mastodon account, go to Preferences > Public profile, and here look for the section "Extra fields"

  3. Paste your page's link in a “Content” field and “Label” it as you wish. It could be labelled “Website” or “Personal Page” or anything you like!

  4. Click on the “Save changes” button at the bottom :blocky_white_cursor:

  5. Your verified link(s) should appear in green on your Mastodon profile page once it is validated (this could take a few hours to resolve so be patient).

  6. Magic!✨

A little advice about social media from someone who has been on social media since it has existed. You don’t have to argue. When someone wants to argue with you, you should block them. There is no good outcome possible from arguing on social media.

Just had to attend to my M2 MacBook Air which having taken it out of the house for the first time to use on the DLR via my iPhone, now didn’t stay on the BT Smarthub’s WiFi, so I had to restart the BT Smarthub, then reboot the Raspberry Pi 4 that runs Firefish for my firefish instance, and it still hasn’t come up!

While TOTP is on!

I hate programming, luckily I’ve never had to do any actual programming, ever

But if I did have to do any programming on a serious level (won’t happen) then I think I’d put some effort into learning Lisp (can’t take more than half an hour to get on top of it, surely?)

Which brings me to…

Why not eradicate all JavaScript and just use Lisp instead, everywhere – in the browser, on the server, everything just Lisp, never seeing any JavaScript anywhere ever again

u0421793,
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

@only_ohm in fact, I’ve been thinking…
What if back in the late 70s early 80s when the first home computers such as the ZX80, BBC A, Kim 1, Lynx, Dragon, NewBrain, Oric, etc – what if some of those, perhaps the majority, had chosen to build in Lisp into ROM instead of Basic? Where would we be now?

@gadgetboy @liroyleshed when I had a job in recent years I’d often lie down for a nap at any time I felt the need for (typically 25minutes, probably a circadian quarter wave of some sort) but conversely at spurious times after work I’d have an idea and just nip back to my work computer and do the thing for half an hour or so, then get back to “not being at work”
